Arugula! I grow tomatoes in about that much sun--not the highest yields, but okay. I have mostly half-sun garden areas for vegetables because I don't have a super reliable watering system for the drought months in my full sun areas, and I have concentrated on "quality of life" harvests. For me that is greens and herbs that I can add to other foods and that "hold" awhile in the garden so if workweek is busy, I can still use, and things that overwinter so I get late fall, winter and spring use. Things that I can wander out and pick or cut a little to perk up a meal. --cilantro and parsley--add a few leaves or grow enough to add a whole bunch to specific recipes--instead of having to buy and then find it slimy in the frig just when you need it. --arugula is high-value 'cause you can harvest a cupful of leaves every few days and add to purchased Romaine or other lettuce and mmmmm good. Also mizuna, red mustard, kale. Of course in your site you could grow actual other leaf and head lettuces but I find it more efficient to grow the spicy additions. --collards--I cook both the greens, and the "flowers" when they start to go, in the spring (now). I overplanted this past fall and finally had to put some on the compost pile this spring so I could move on. Agree that peas and some other things tolerate shade better than say eggplant. --basil really does better for me in partial sun--it wilts in all day sun unless totally watered. Here is another thing I am going to work on--in areas that have less sun, you may need to get a really good start on the seedlings. So, I had been putting out transplants of things too late, or starting seeds in mid-fall when if I had started earlier when the sun was "higher" then I think they would have done better. Or if you find that seeds grow too spindly you might find that transplants do better.

Ok, those of you who have sown broccoli already, do they transplant well? I will be doing several different ones,never before having sown broccoli,and only guessing on what to do. Thanks for you input. Last year I did tomotoes,and peppers,sown end of April,up in the first week of May,I kept them covered at night because I was affraid of frost,was that not nessessery? My maruba santoh bolted so i've started eating them. The stem is quite nice. You were spot on in saying they were like lettuce. It is very light and more tasteless than napa cabbage we get at the supermarket. I'd probably only finish the seed and grow it at either end of the season when i can't grow much else. I was impressed with the ability to stand cool weather and it still grew quite well. I needed quite a few plants for one meal though as it literally all wilts down to nothing! I had a prize one which was starting to look like a cabbage the way it splayed out but the it is a magnet for all sorts of pests and i think it might have cabbage root fly or something. Normally they wilt during the afternoon and i have to water them early and evening and they plump back up but this one i suspect has root damage. Shame as i was looking forward to harvesting the biggest and baddest one. Will harvest the rest tomorrow so i get to eat them instead of the flea beetles and friends. Interesting thing is they seem to prefer that over the tatsoi and those in turn over my mustards. They take a lil bite of the mustard and move on. I have already sown tokyo bekana and fun jen so i expect those will be similar. Looking forward to various mustards and choi sum. What have you got growing? :)

Fruitnut! First off, welcome back and what a beautiful tree you have there. Is that tree planted in the ground? It's amazing, from my whole family. I have been tempted to plant one in the ground in mine too. Hey Blaze. Good to hear they are doing good. Now, I suppose you just might try this method, I just might. I have been debating it for days.
