Celtic, you might want to start your own thread so more people will see your request. Unfortunately my little 'boo grove is still too small to harvest any decent canes. You might want to put an ad in craigslist.com for someone local to your area? Rfgpitt, hmm, I didn't know that about them. :) Hopefully in a few years they will be big enough to create their own shade. I've had them since 2002 or so and they are still small, during bad winters the culms die back totally, but new ones come back in late spring. I think the grove is about oh, maybe 10 feet long total. I might grow yellow groove this year, it's hardy to -15 or something. :)

Hi, Idaho. I'm in zone 5a only few miles from 4b. Put a couple of Fargesia murieliae in last spring. Overwinter low was -17F in Dec & Jan w/ plenty more days w/ subzero lows. F. m. has come thru w/ flying colors. Mulched well w/ shredded cedar mulch & pine needles. No protection otherwise. Already greening up w/ new growth w/in a couple inches of last years top. I planted for the same reason you want. It's a clumper so it won't go all over and height/spread is good for screening. Hope this helps. Dave - Colorado Springs

The oldhamii just lost its leaves and it got down to 18 last winter as the lowest here in Anderson, SC(yes where the anderson clone 'moso' comes from. The chungii seemed to have some culm damage but is leafing back out pretty good now. The multiplex does fine and the textilis also does fine here. I figured that even if the oldhamii does get killed to the ground if we happen to have one freak winter that the roots will be pretty large and it should still be able to put up some decent canes.
