I started out years ago with handwritten markers next to the roses and a drawing of the garden bed with the roses marked on it. Then I gradually increased until I needed a looseleaf binder to hold a page for each rose I had planted, and finally I graduated to an Excel spread sheet. I still do the hand drawn map of each bed (there are now over a dozen distinct areas in my garden so that many maps) and I still have markers next to each rose although now I use a labeler to write out the name. I can identify from memory almost every one of my 200 roses. (But now and then I have brain fade and I have to bend down to check the marker, LOL!) The spreadsheet just helps me track where I bought the rose, own root or grafted, what year, fragrance, size, disease resistance and other info I might find useful.

Yo there, Seax88. You are quite right to decline that suggestion. That sort of thing has not worked since the 70s, I don't think and whoever suggested it has not been through NAIA customs in the last 10 years. Even if it were possible to slip through, it is a very, very dangerous practice with the potential to destroy whole crops and I'm not even exaggerating. And it's just rude, as I'm sure you will agree. Anyway, I think I am almost sure it will not be possible for you to bring a live plant out of the Philippines into (I'm assuming) the US. The proper procedure is to have US and Philippine phytosanitary inspectors regularly inspect the nursery to ensure they are not hosting pathogens that could spread all over. This means that the nursery would already have to be certified before the fact. Then, the plant material would have to go through the applicable phytosanitary protocol (there are different kinds for live plants, fresh plant produce, animal products, etc) probably involving things like sprays, vapor heat treatment or whatever it is they do for live plants. These standards and protocols are obviously necessary safety measures but even something that obvious is not that simple in practice. It is also a widely-used tool for trade restriction which is why Philippine mangoes are only found in very specific restaurants in California and only come from one specific island in the Philippines (Guimaras). The stakes are quite high, considering the number of orchards in California and Florida alone (they will be at risk from possible contamination with agricultural pests). The stakes are even higher if you consider the volume of (icky) mango imports from wherever those abominations come from (lol note my bias there), since their market will be under threat from vastly superior mangoes (lol). ANYWAY, putting aside my rabid Philippine mango obsession...That's how difficult it is likely to be. Of course things might have changed in the last three years since I was last home but I doubt it. If you want, I can help you get in touch with someone who would know more. The good news is that there are adenium sources already in the US and although I have never personally tried it, there are exporters out of Thailand and Taiwan as well and they are well-known in this forum of wonderful enablers. Besides, those prices are ridiculous. In the unlikely event that I will feel compelled to pay $65 for an adenium plant, it better be at least 15 years old with a caudex the size of my office chair. blue lyme grass! Blimey, that's brave. I grew this in my gravel beds for a year or so but then bottled out on realising I was actually growing a turbo-charged couch-grass. I did swap over to the (better behaved) leymus magellanica,,,,, but this was deeply unhappy and vanished quicksmart....but not before seeding everywhere). I first read about the leymus arenarius in one of Christopher Lloyd books and rushed out to buy....but then later read that he (Lloyd) employed his youthful gardener to dig it up annually, chopping into the ferocious rhizomes and replanting....which obviously, I did NOT do, only to freak out in season 2 when the clump tripled in size. The leymus magellanicus was a heartbreakingly lush powder blue (never attained with any number of heliotrichums or festucas).......so I may have to make another attempt and maybe protect a little better from winter wet. I have been sowing your seeds (the zephyranthes reminded me), especially the penstemons and callirhoes. I have a (tiny) packet ready to send your way.

they plant and move easily all summer long ... just get them in the ground ... unless you are a master of pot science ... or want to become one .... there are 3 parts to a hosta.. the roots.. a potato like crown.. and the leaves above. .. the crown should be planted AT soil level ... with no roots showing ... so .. just pop them all in the ground ... AND THEN START DESIGNING A GARDEN BED ... and if it takes all summer.. fine.. we will move the hosta over to it in early fall ... this will reduce your feeling of being overwhelmed ... which was the thesis of what you asked ... what weed above.. may have failed to mention ... is how many years.. it took her design to evolve ... and that is what you are overwhelmed about ... you know.. the hosta will live.. if you throw them on the driveway for summer.. entirely remove them from your stress level ... but the surest way to not screw it up.. is to plant them in mother earth ... you dont mention how many you have... but you couple probably put 100 of them in a 10 by 10 foot area ... i would call it a nursery bed.. where it will be easy to deal with them ... while you think up a plan like weeds ... just make it easy.. by reducing your stress variables... so it is said.. so it is written... good luck ken ps: after putting them in the nursery bed.. then you have to ID the trees you have .. and decide if any of them do NOT favor hosta.. like the dreaded maple... and then.. you have to define light levels.. then define soil type ... etc ... frankly .. it would take me all summer.. to figure it all out.. and then i would plant in fall ... and that is why a nursery bed would be brilliant... BTW .. are they in potting media in the pots.. or dirt.. if dirt.. its IMPERATIVE.. that they be planted immediately ... otherwise.. you are going to have severe watering problems in the heat of the summer ...
