Windows above the bed are problematic from a window treatment standpoint. Even if you don't need coverings for privacy, you might like them for light blocking if you would like to sleep after the sun rises or when there is an especially bright moon. Windows beside the bed have a similar issue because draperies are difficult to draw without interfering with bedside tables. Of course, you can add blinds or shades of some sort to any window.

I like a lot of windows, but dislike windows over a bed; therefore, in my house I would like Option 2 best. (Different reason than above, as we are in a hot climate.) I like to look out the windows at the view. However, option three seems to be window overkill, even to me.

i like option 2 with the short windows. I think those with the window on the other wall will be plenty of light. I also think option 3 is too many windows.

I think you are right. My current bedroom is like option 2 with the tall Windows, but there are no other Windows in the room, just the bathroom. Even so, I never look out those Windows and having to have my nightstands right under a window is a pain from the point of dealing with window treatments. At least in this bedroom I will have the additional Windows on the other wall.

My daughter has the short windows above the bed in several bedrooms. They look nice but they're too high to enjoy a view and they are hard to access for window treatments for darkening the room.

Sleep patterns change and now both myself and granddaughter need it dark. So her bedroom and guestroom have thin plywood sheets painted in the trim color put in the window frames 24-7. (they can be removed if necessary).

I would do Option 2 with full size windows. The short windows would again be awkward for window treatments.

I have a bed above my window and it's not something I would prefer. Along one side of the bed we have a French door, and I wonder if that wouldn't be a nice option for you. It really adds a bit of elegance to a bedroom. We also have two master bedrooms and both of them have French doors. It's really worth the expense. From a former house that had two windows in addition to a huge window I think the way the light comes in is enhanced.

I have windows above my bed, the full length+ of the king sized bed and full walls of windows on the other two exterior walls. I love those windows, as I can look up and see the tops of the trees and the sky. There probably is a bit of air current, no draft really, but not too much because they are wood windows and fairly new. I have no window coverings at all on any of them, so that is not a problem and I love them. I do think window coverings would be awkward.

My vote would be for option 2 with the longer windows. I would opt for windows that would be easy to use with the nightstands (casement instead of double hung). I like light to come in from 2 sides of a room and I also like to choose what window to open based on breezes (I prefer fresh air when sleeping). I would absolutely think about how this plays into window coverings because when the moon is full, it makes difficult for some to sleep if the light is not blocked.

You have received good advice about your window placement. I wanted to add that you should be sure that you leave enough clearance between the edge of the wall and your window for your curtain and rod. We occasionally get questions from people who can't fit a rod over a window because the window is too close to the wall.

The other issue is to consider exterior balance and aesthetics, especially if the room is in the front of the house.

I like one on either side of the bed. Here is a pic.

I would either put windows on either side of the bed or one double window on the back of the house. Maybe not both. Window treatments can get expensive, especially room darkening draperies. And does your room face either east or west and get full sun part of the day? That can make a huge difference in window placement. You should also consider other furniture placement you desire to have in your bedroom and wall space available.

I wouldn't put a window over the bed for exactly the reasons already mentioned.

When we were building, we designed our window placement around our the bedroom furniture we knew we'd be keeping, and chose your option #2. The only difference in our upstairs windows vs. our downstairs windows is that we decided on 4' tall windows for upstairs instead of the 5' tall windows we have downstairs. That way, there is a little more privacy for the bedrooms and there is an inch or so of wall between the bedside tables and the lower window trim (so the furniture doesn't overlap with the windows).

I love your last example with the long drapes going behind the bedside tables... I hadn't thought of that but think it looks beautiful. I also don't think the last example looks like overkill if that is going to be the only wall in your bedroom with windows. We have a bay window along an adjacent wall, plus we get light from the adjoining bathroom windows, but if that weren't the case I'd consider high windows above the bed if you wouldn't mind the morning light. I think I'd have a hard time with them only because I like to sleep in when I can ;)
