when to begain sealing canes to deter cane borers
Comments (8)It all depends on what cane borers are a problem where you garden. A well respected rose grower out in California doesn't bother with sealing because his borer's only go down half an inch. In my garden, I've followed a different kind of borer down eight inches. This can be a bad thing on a HT, but tolerable on some Old Garden Roses. What I found was that my borers go into freshly cut pith. When I would prune in late January, the pith would be too tough for the borers who would come out (presumably) in late April. Later pruning in late March would lead to problems. This is one of those times when keeping a garden calender (not a every day of the year, but a multi-year) so you could check when you pruned those Knockouts last year. That would give you more of a feel for when the borers could find success, and when you could interrupt them....See MoreRose Cane Borer
Comments (6)There are multiple borers and the damage they do varies. Baldo has written that his borers only go a short way into the canes. In my garden, I've found larvae four or five inches down. (Those HAVE to be two different critters.) Yesterday I found a really disgusting nest of ants in a rose cane; carpenter ants tending their young. (Gone now). Something I've tried to get numbers on, and have had zero success with, is timing when my borers get active. When I've done a HT pruning in early January, the cut surfaces ahve hardened off and the borers haven't been a problem. But when I pruned when the local rose society recommended (to get HT blooms for a scheduled show), I found most canes were bored. That implied an early to mid April borer activity here. Sealers worked, BTW. That late Easter freeze two years ago knocked my plannings for a loop and the critters haven't had many good canes to go into for the past two years....See MoreCane borers . . . Comments (2)The trouble with the pale blooms sounds like flower thrips. These build up under certain weather conditions and spoil pale roses for a while. The bug in the cane sounds like the small carpenter bee. These are not true cane borers, and the damage they do is not very scary. They make a chamber to raise the young, and it will stay the same size. Usually they drill into cut cane ends, but occasionally through the side. You can leave this cane until spring pruning next year, if you wish. I wouldn't expect that the fertilizer has any relation to pest problems....See MoreURGENT!!!!! CANE BORERS!
Comments (3)Not sure I'm any help, the black bugs I think are the small carpenter bee. They do lay their eggs in early spring in pithy plants. I'm just not sure that the cuttings will still be viable once bored. I don't think they bore to far in you may be able to seal with wood clue. Next time you have cuttings try placing a tiny dab of wood glue on the cut to keep them out. None of that is much help right now thou. I wish you good luck....See Morenikthegreek
