DIY Contemporary Grey Kitchen reveal
DH and I purchased a small ranch home in foreclosure
intending to rent the home until we retire and likely live in it. The home was built in 1974 and the kitchen
cabinets were original. There had been a
few cosmetic changes, but nothing major, and in the last 10 years of its life
had been sorely neglected/abused. It did
have a porcine inhabitant, but alas, not the towel pig of GW fame, rather a pet
pot-bellied pig who left his mark, so to speak, throughout the house.
The kitchen and most of the house was a total gut. We opened the wall between the kitchen and
living room, added a large window, moved the sink and dw, added an island and
put hardwood flooring throughout the majority of the house.
DH and I did the vast majority of the work ourselves.
Because the home needed some structural work, we were required to hire a
contractor to replace some roof joists; they also installed the LVL beam
required to open the wall. We were required to use a licensed
electricians and plumber as the property was to be a rental.

I don't have photos of the bare wires running up the cabinet drain pipe hole
for the dishwasher (zap!) or the homemade wood microwave shelf installed about
12-14 inches above the range.
FINISHED:
I learned an enormous amount about kitchen design from GW and
could not have managed this project without it. Thanks to all who have
contributed so much to the hive-mind over the years.

It is a gray blue glass tile. The right most fits the budget. It is Adex subway tile. The size I am considering is different. It is a 2X4 beveled subway. The color I am thinking is also different. I would like a big favor from photshop experts. I would like to visualize the gray blue fully in the window wall and the hood wall. DH wants us to tile the computer wall too. Also, is it possible to photoshop two more options. One is Adex celery 2X4 beveled subway tile too fully on all the walls. And the other option is to do the celery/bone with everywhere except beneath and above the hood. I would like to try the gray/blue glass tile just above and below the hood. Please help me make a decision and give your suggestions too. Comments (87)Weird - I didn't even notice that the number of pictures went way down. It's very good information for anyone doing a reveal thread who enjoys before/after pictures. All the pics are copyright (me), not anyone's site. With the laundry room we're caught between a rock and a hard place. It's in the garage right now, a long trek from anywhere and it's complicated but there are water/drain/dryer vent issues that cannot be reconciled at that location. To move the washer/dryer to the area with three bedrooms we would completely lose a bedroom or bathroom. We no longer plan on having it directly off the master bedroom, however by process of elimination it will either be off the master bathroom or (large) master closet. Luckily both areas are ideal in terms of utilities/venting and where laundry is generated, and they're reasonably easy to access from the other three bedrooms. Comments (64)Rita, you're too kind as you're always are..thank you so much! the pics are awful the more I look at them lol. well in my defence it's really hard to take good pics unless there's plenty of natural light..and somebody else is taking them:) Who knows better. We just moved in then(the pics taken within first week or two of us in..we had guests coming 9 days after we moved. Guests are my sacred cows.), Obviously more lived in now. We managed to clean the laptop memory some, so i might be able to show you new art, at some point. I'm torn as to where to put it. I'm torn between my initial plan and better balance-and egocentrical needs of me seeing art better from where i usually see it. Lol. The mistakes still stay mistakes though. We didn't get to remedy anything yet. The hardscaping/landscaping of the backyard..still awaits. But we put in one more arch(lol. my DH couldn't live without it) and finally installed back door closet. My friend took pics of the house for her photo business but she was very fascinated with details, I thought she's gonna take these wide lens pics like real estate photographers- but she was so much into books and lights and art and compositions of sorts. Her photos are hundred times better. I think I posted some of hers here and there. They're just a very different approach of showing space. She didn't care about capturing shower niches lol. She has Instagram. And artistic vision. And great camera and knowledge how to use it. While I have you guys:) And strange abilty to write long posts. If I leave a message on somebody's phone it's also painful. (I'm the best when I have someting like flu btw. I get short, clear, and to the point. I wanted to add photos of my first complex IKEA hack, a narrow broom closet first seen here on GW! It came out great, I am pleased with it. The little nook was planned with a coffee station in mind.

8 years agohappy2b…gw thanks! Don't undervalue the huge benefits of having a helper who cleans -- it is not my strength, so it was always a struggle to keep the worksites tidy. Here are some pics of the bathrooms. They don't show the tile very well, unfortunately.

Master bath shower. We used a pre-made pan, but built a bench in the shower, effectively making it 60" long.
