How do I get rid of this plague of compost flies?
Comments (43)Just a quick update... First off, thanks again to everyone who posted here, your advice was very welcome. I had surprising difficulty finding some proper soil/compost/stuff/whatever for the house plants. All the local garden centres had sold out, and I still haven't got any. However, I cut back on the watering quite drastically, and now only water when the plants look like they need it. The plants look as fine as they ever did, my chilli plants are all flowering, and the flies have basically gone. We still get the odd one or two, but nothing that would make me think twice. We don't see them around the plants any more, which makes me think that the few we see are either tough ones that haven't had the decency to die since we dried out there homes, or ones that have come from elsewhere. I still intend to repot as and when I can get some soil, but it's a lot less urgent now. Thanks again....See Moresterling silver flatware in the dw
Comments (8)I agree with Becky....and you also may be using too much detergent.... Your silverware will polish...try it to be sure....but the glassware may be ruined. Are you using the power dry cycle? that may also contribute....it the detergent isn't getting rinsed off well enough and then the heat cycle comes on....that all contributes to dulling the finish. I ruined several sets of glasses and coulded some of my good lead crystal wine glasses before I figured out "less detergent!!!" Today's detergents are made for people who don't scrape nor pre rinse their dishes and are built strong to take care of the extra gunk. But if you rinse your dishes, then there is extra detergent in the washer and it acts on the dishes and glassware....because there is no more food. Get some Wrights....polish your silver....and try less of a perhaps different product. Comments (29)Here's one point about vacuuming extra fine construction dust that no one has made yet & it's key. When I went to buy a new brush attachment at the vacuum store to clean up our construction dust, the staff person educated me about a couple of things. Since the bag in our vacuum was paper, the ultra fine dust will flow right through it. Why didn't I think of that! Even with a thick, cloth HEPA vacuum filter bag, we run the risk of burning out our vacuum because anything that goes into the bag goes through the motor. Once that fine dust hits the motor, it doesn't take long for it to kill it. A Dyson being bagless won't work either, it just coats the inside of the vacuum, clogs & kills it. Here's further info. on that: http://www.vacuumland.org/cgi-bin/TD/TD-VIEWTHREAD.cgi?4407 He added that he's seen a brand new Kirby vacuum cleaner motor burned out after just TWO DAYS when it was used on construction dust. Kirby owners be forewarned! The suggestion of using a Rainbow vacuum is a good one because of the water filer. Of course they cost a small fortune, so I'm wondering if maybe a local rental store might rent them. It's not ideal, but neither is dropping $2K on a top end vacuum cleaner. And Mr. Rings, hopefully it goes without saying that a leaf blower is a horrible idea, unless your goal is to simply spread the dust around. ;-) I'm still figuring out how to clean up our mess, but hopefully the info. I've shared will save some from ruining their vacuum cleaners & causing undue added expense & frustration. Happy cleaning & good luck to all!...See MoreHow Many Sets of Flatware Do You Have?
Comments (88)We love all things sterling! We use sterling flatware daily. Might as well use it if you have it! My mother gave me my grandfather's set from his second marriage (after her mother passed away) - original box and all from the mid 1950s. Gorham Willow, 8 place settings. Don't LOVE it but it is nice to use daily. My thrifting uncle found and gave me 6 dinner forks in Tiffany Wave Edge which I love. Also found a few serving pieces. I would love to get more of that when budget permits. Then we have two toddler sets for our children, but just "upgraded" our 5 yr old son to a youth sterling set in Gorham Rondo. I do have a silverplate set I purchased in Romania that was manufactured in the old USSR (stamped CCCP on the back). Still love it and the memories it holds but use the sterling more....See MoreRelated Professionals
