I faced the same issue. I have oak cabinets and I had faux wood color trim and doors. It's awful. My finished basement has real wood doors/trim and it's lovely, but the main level is filled with orange oak and faux trim/doors.

I painted my cabinets a soft gray color about 5 years ago and when we installed new hardwood I started the long process of all new white trim and I started painting the doors white. I'm still not done, but I couldn't handle the faux wood trim my house had. I love the new white trim, but painting the doors is a lot of work.

We had oak kitchen cabinets & cheap pine (stained to look like oak) trim throughout the house. The doors were wood & also stained. We kept the oak cabinets until we could afford a new kitchen (17 years) but replaced all the trim throughout the house to white painted trim & painted the doors white to match the trim. This was many years ago. If it had been nice trim, we might have also painted it. It wasn't worth the expense or the time & effort to sand & paint.

edit: I have my new white kitchen now & the painted doors are holding up well. We painted those doors 10 - 15 years ago.

I think the mix of white and real wood would actually look nice. I say, if you want to paint the cabinets, go for it!

My walls are similar in color to MrsShayne's. I painted the door trim white and switched out the baseboards to the 5 1/2" and painted them white when we had new flooring installed. I will never do the doors, though. It would be impossible for me to get all the nooks and crannies without drips, etc. The white adds just enough contrast for me.

I also have some white cabinets in my kitchen. We changed our baseboards to white but left the window and door trim and the doors as stained. I love the look!
