Will you have chairs at the island? I would push the table right--closer to the couch, to keep the entire table+chairs piece within the hall-wall space. If that makes any sense.....

There will be approx 3 counter stools at the island. Don't critique the kitchen layout based on this picture (as I've reconfigured a lot of individual cabinets), but it shows how I want to put the stools on the "bottom" end of the island. :)

You can check with your builder, but typically you would walk through your home after framing is up to make final decisions about light fixtures, switches, etc. That way you can actually visualize the space, see where it makes sense to put the table and the fixture above it. With open concepts, it's hard to visualize in advance and it would be nice if there were more options for attractive light fixtures that could be moved around in a space, rather than forcing an early decision on lighting and then the table must be centered under it! Most of the flexible options I've seen are very modern (e.g. lighting on wires).

Well, we are going modern -- but not quite "exposed wires" modern! I'm thinking about using two sputnik knock-offs over the dining table. :)

Good point omelet. That's exactly what we did-- waited to hang chandelier and island pendents until the last electrical push.

Is that typical? I thought they hung the junction boxes during the mechanical rough-in (after framing, before drywalling)?

Not sure what's typical, honestly. But you're right--outlets, switches, and boxes were placed after framing. Maybe they put boxes in the vicinity of where the lights would be hung? Close enough that it would be easy to accommodate a few inches here or there?
