Sandhill Cranes heading North!

I just saw them flying North this morning here in Naperville and just under 3 months ago I posted some pictures of them heading South right here on this forum (http://nature.gardenweb.com/discussions/3533347/what-kind-of-cranes)!

What gives? Is this a sign of things to come, a result of global climate change? Or is it more specific to the ongoing El Nino phenom? The NOAA, in its seasonal climate forecast, did say that it will be a warmer-than-average spring and summer in the northern tier states.

Northern Illinois. They are likely following the Fox River northward.

The hyacinths have big, fat buds showing color; another week of this weather will probably cause the blossoms to open. Only three months early. I'm seriously considering starting the seeds for tomatoes and peppers [usually a late March project]. Last year I could have safely put the plants into the garden in April, this year it would seem that February might be okay. This is zone 6b~7??? OTOH, the juncos are still resident.

I remember traveling through Nebraska occasionally when my parents were driving back and forth to the West Coast. I loved the solitude, but it does take special kind of person to live it. I lived for awhile in Kansas, a state right under Nebraska, when my first husband was an engineer for a pipeline. It was just a short jaunt for us to go across the Oklahoma panhandle into Texas, so where we lived had more of a S.W. taste than Nebraska, and lacked those beautiful hills. Coming from an area with hilly terrain, and then being transplanted for many more years as a young adult in equally hilly terrains of the Ozarks, I felt desperately out of place in the sandy flatlands. What strikes me most about the interior prairies of this country are the extremes. You are either freezing to death, burning up, wishing for rain, or dodging tornadoes. But, the creatures who live there, and the miles and miles of openness are haunting and beautiful.

looking for Sandhill Cranes in NE Florida

While on the plane, on my way to Florida this past January, I was reading an article on how 'scarce' the sandhill crane was. Well, you can imagine my amazement when I was driving in the Orlando area, doing the touristy things, but to see a sandhill wandering around on someone's lawn and another pair hanging out on the side of the road! So now I am sort of wondering about that article. :-)

It worked for me except for sound - I do get snippets of sound, so I know it's there(doesn't work for my parents). THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR POSTING!!! This will make next year's vacation planning so much easyer! I do need a bigger camera though, may head to a pawn shop for one, lol. I've been eyeballing the Platt river Sandhills for vacation ever since I heard of it. Sandhills are one of my favorites. We have them here in Florida year round and they were in my backyard in the last appartment I was in (sadly couldn't afford the drive out there every day). Can't wait till next year!!!

Naperville is ~30 miles west (and a bit south) of Chicago - it is located on the DuPage River (which eventually ends up in Mississippi after joining other rivers).

Like the cranes, it seems most of my juncos have left for north too - I only see the odd one around. We are expecting a snowstorm tomorrow and such events usually draw the birds out. So I will see if they have skipped town or are still around. It is a bit unnerving to see such rapid changes.

ggopal, I still have several juncos and it was 71 (seventy-one) degrees today. I wish they would never leave. So sweet.

I know exactly how you feel about Juncos - I always feel sad when they leave but the arrival of House Wrens compensates! In the same way, I feel blue when Fall comes (the landscape looks so desolate) but always cheer up when I see the Juncos. They make everything seem alright with the world!

A few are still around but seeing the warming trend, they might take off soon. They have been putting away millet and peanut butter suet.

Spring is certainly the best part of the year - at 5am yesterday there were hundreds of birds singing in the neighborhood! If only it would last :-)

Shyamala, what else do your Juncos eat besides millet? Now I'm wondering if I shouldn't have stopped feeding a mix with millet. It never ends.
