Can I get my alum. oxide Brazilian Cherry Floors refinished?

I have 6 year old Bellawood (I know it's awful, but stuck with it) Brazilian Cherry hardwood floors in my great room. It shows every single speck of dust, footprints,etc. I have been reading up on getting them refinished and know it can be challenging. Since I don't want to tear it all out due to the cost, I would like to get a matte finish applied. Any tips for getting a successful sand and recoat or should I just get them recoated by using something like the Tycoat or Bona system? The floor doesn't have a lot of scratches but there are some around the dining room table from the chairs. I could live with the scraches, I can't stand the shiny finish!

You absolutely can get is sanded and refinished. Like you said it is a pain, but AO gets refinished everyday. who ever is doing it, just needs to make sure they get it all off, or you will notice it when the new finish is applied. paying particular attention to corners.

Sanding means it take out the bevels, this is where a good pro comes in. someone who pays attention will make sure they get sanded out. improper sanding can lead to areas that the bevels are not completely sanded out.

As far as just a buff n coat on the floor, thats a potential option, not a DIY. a pro would need to come in and do a spot test to make sure he can get proper adhesion of the new coat of finish.

Glad I am mostly out of the refinishing business. Would not want to refinish AO finished exotic specie floors.

One of the first things you want to do is determine if the scratch involves the hardwood floors or is simply a scratch in the protective coating you have on the flooring. In fact, the scratch may simply be a mark in the shellac or the sealant you used to protect the finish. If that is the case, simply buffing the area and reapplying a coat of shellac or sealant will remove the scratch and make your hardwood floors look like new. ciciliotandson

Despite not liking how dark my Brazilian Cherry floors became in my home office, I loved them so much in my family room so I have been so disappointed they were ruined in my flood recently. I have tried so many sample big boards from a local store and I am realizing that the wide board just does not look good in my home office and I do love my floors despite the color change. I am not back into deciding which exotic wood floor but in the 3.25" or 3.5" wide depending on which engineered width is being offered. All the really wide boards in other brands just do not look right in my home office with little floor showing to my eyes. Also if the boards are shorter and less wide, more of the light boards will be seen and I will see the mosaic of colors that I fell in love with almost 4 year ago when I installed my floors. Yes, they change color but no wood is perfect especially if one is stuck with engineered wood since I am on a slab floor and I have to make sure the wood looks good with my Putty file cabinets. Hope this helps others that despite the problems associated with Brazilian Cherry needing to be cleaned more often and darkening, I do love the exotic floors the way they dramatically make a room come alive if one can't have rugs in the room.

A dark jatoba or espresso stain will take BC to a chocolate color. Do you know what flooring you have? If engineered with a thin veneer, proceed with caution. And obviously you're doing this for a potential buyer, so you might just want to offer them a credit on the purchase price and let the buyer deal with the refinishing of the floors. You never know if they'll balk at the new color or back out of the deal, etc. Mongo

I'm sure if you looked carefully at your existing floors, you'd find that it doesn't even match itself in a lot of places! The spots that get a lot of direct sunlight are going to be different than the ones under rugs and furniture. But as everyone has said, the new floors will "age" to look like the old ones within a year. It might bother you for a few months, but by the time you stop noticing the difference from sheer familiarity, the actual difference will be gone anyway.

Brazilian cherry floors are more delicate/ work to refinish. Being a pre-finished in using the recoat system I would be worry about the finish puddling in the micro bevels. Don't know your sq. footage , but those systems are not that cheap, you might be better off with a complete sanding.

Your floors can possibly be recoated, and if it works, it's has advantages over resanding. A six year old floor shouldn't need resanding. I've had decent results prepping and recoating AO floors but I limit my work to floors I installed. Using the wrong maintenance products can hinder the adhesion of a new coat, even when you follow the proper preparation steps. What has the floor been maintained with? Your statement that it shows every speck of dust and footprints, makes me wary. Maybe you're exaggerating a bit, or perhaps the floor was coated with something that is causing that issue.

Do you have any original unused flooring? If so, how does the gloss level compare to your floor? I looked up their Brazilian Cherry and only see it offered in a matte finish but the product may have changed since yours was purchased.
