Tool Maintenance

I've been dissatisfied with the performance of my Felco Pruners and I'm sure it's the fact that I just haven't taken the time to improve my techniques of keeping them in good shape. We sharpen them daily but they're not always as sharp as I think they are even right after sharpening them. And they start out fine, but after using them awhile, they start leaving a little remnant on the cut and I don't know if that is the way I'm sharpening them or some other adjustment.
So, this year, I'm going to improve and I wanted to start out making sure I have all the products I need to keep my tools in great shape.
I did watch the video on the Felco site on how to maintain my pruners, and the products they use, add up to as much as the cost of a new set of pruners! A whetstone, cleaning lubricant, Felco 990 pruner grease, and an adjustment key. We have a different tool to sharpen and it's obviously not working well.
Is anyone here having more success with keeping their tools in good shape and could advice me on which products are the best to purchase to do that?
