Indoor plants that aren't rootbound only need water about once a week and only enough to where a little water appears in the saucer. I have houseplants that are over 20 years old that have never been watered more than once a week, and some Fridays I forget to water so they wait until the next Friday or until I notice they are drooping. I haven't grown herbs indoors, but they can stand quite a bit of neglect outside. I've overwintered huge pepper plants inside, and I just water them once a week too. Good luck!

Hey I noticed someone mentioned rosemary overwintering here ok? I didn't know that! Is there any special type that you grow? Any special care? Oh the things to learn!!! BAGARDENERMOM- hey I totally love the starting seeds indoors thing too but if this is your first time gardening also feel free to BUY some transplants around April at your local store or even walmart. You can always do both too. But I just wanted to make sure that you know just buying a few transplants at wally world is a GREAT no pressure way to get started in gardening! Also, if you need some time to make a garden bed and build up soil this summer- consider container gardening too while you work on the yard garden started. Just remember that you will have to water and keep an eye on any pots that will get dried out quickly in our heat and WIND! Look for some dwarf varieties of plants to get you started in container gardening. For more info google it- its a pretty popular style for people with no yards or even apartments!

Dynamic lifter is a good fertilizer but before you do anything you need to see what the soil is like. Fertilizer won't improve soil and is a waste of money if your plants are struggling in soil that's too light or too heavy, or full of roots from competing trees. I would salvage what I could from those gardens - perennials herbs etc, weed out the rest (saving the sunflower seeds for the birds :-) ) and dig it over. What you need is good soil to grow veggies. Too sandy will need compost added to bulk it up and reduce water loss. Too old and heavy may just need breaking up, watering, compost and working over. You may even need to bring in some better soil to work into what you've got. So, I'd go for compost and soil improvement first. That might also involve adding some organic fertilizers. If you are on a budget, you should also start setting up your own compost area so you can recycle your "good" kitchen scraps and "good" weeds. I notice a number of skinny things on top of the soil that I would normally call "catkins" and suspect come from a pine tree or similar - do you have any overhanging trees like that?

I live in Holland where darkness seems to get the upper hand in winter time. I need extra lighting to get the plants grown. First i bought some 6500k 23 watt lamps. but they dont do the trick. stems are to long and they grow to slow. I dont know if light is the problem where you live, but if you have light you can grow almost anything. im growing (but poorly): mint, parsley, turnip tops (only stems :( ), and spinach (this one needs a bit of cold to sprout so this one goes the best for me indoor strange enough.? Im still wandering if i should buy higher wattage lamps. If i use a lamp off 70 watt for 6 hours a day, it will cost me 35euro a year energy cost. dont know if thats worth it :P
