Your rug is beautiful! Oriental rugs are timeless will fit into any style. If you are looking to modernize, your furniture is where you will determine the style of your room.

We live in a ranch-style home with a semi-open floor plan and a very large red brick fireplace. We also have a red/blue Persian rug like yours in the living room and two other cream Persians in the den and dining room. They seem to blend with any color I choose, and I am sure your rug will go with almost any gray. You could reference the gray in your living room by using a gray grout with your white kitchen tile. My kitchen has a sort of silver gray wall paint and white cabinets, and there is gray in the granite counters. It all works!

Grey and brown go very well together. I don't think you have to purchase new sofa unless you want to.

I am trying very, very hard to get past this sentiment. Part of my reluctance to give up on the oriental rugs is their practicality! They last forever, stains don't show (or come out with a good cleaning), and even when they get worn after 50 years, they still look nice.

But I have come to realize that my 1950's era Kerman just doesn't look good with any decor I would choose. If I had a daughter maybe it would work In a pink princess room, but I don't. My smaller 80's era rugs are usable in hallways and entries. But they don't compare to my friend's "real" antique orientals, which look phenomenal in contemporary and traditional settings. I am sorry to say that your rug looks more similar to my rugs than my friend's.

I have two larger rugs in bedrooms and one large rug in my living room, but over an even larger seagrass rug (that helps).

If I were doing the amount of work you are describing I would try even harder to get past my "must use the rugs" mentality. I really think it is a mistake. One thing I would suggest - see how much you could sell your rugs for. Then ask yourself, "Do I want to work my whole house around $?? worth of rugs?

your old set-up is similar to mine and I also have oriental rugs too expensive to dismiss. my current home, recently renovated, has white kitchen, more grey and blue than beige and brown and I've stored my orientals. Until...I can make it work by way of accessories and curtains. I cant afford to change furniture now and I don't believe I can tie it together so that my expensive furniture, carpets and new kitchen 'flow' so I am looking for fabrics that tie in all the colours and the feel, that way I spend money on 'finishing' as opposed to starting again.

Get a designer in for an hour consult, I've done it in the past and found they save me more than they cost.

The curtains stayed with the old house so I don't have to worry about that. Paula7658 - great advice on a designer consult. I really never thought about an hourly consulting and agree I would feel more confident with a whole house plan even if it is an over-time-to-implement plan.

Selling my rugs is not an option. I have three rugs (one round, one runner and the one in the picture) and spent --gulp-- about $15,000 on them albeit almost 20 years ago. These are not antique rugs and I probably got taken since I don't know much about oriental rugs. But at this point it is what it is. I do like the rugs though. I just had the rugs professionally cleaned and they will be ready to go into my remodeled home when it is done.

I would need new rugs if I don't use these and that is not in my budget. I have an older dog that has mobility issues so walking directly on hardwood floors is hard for her. She needs a rug to get around. oh the things we do for our dogs!

Off to find a local designer for consultation.

I have similar rugs and painted my walls Accessible Beige (a cool beige/gray). I have white sofas and pull in the reds/navy from the rug in my pillows. I'm very pleased with the combo. It looks fresh with just the right amount of color! Love your rugs!

The rug is beautiful and the designer will be able to give you fresh new ideas that will make you fall in love with your rug all over again.
