How 2 properly vent windo unit whose outside is 2B enclosed area?
Comments (6)I'm going to have someone build a tight enclosure to fit on the outside of the unit, which will funnel into a pipe, which then will run along the rafter to the outside. Since a window unit puts out a slight pressure, the pipe would basically be like an exhaust pipe. There will also be a line for the condensate to a jug. An easy and elegant $100-150 job. And I've decided to get a 1 ton portable unit for the garage - that way I can take it with me for my next house, and at least have a an emergency backup (for both hurricane power loss or if the central unit would go down), or even for my current house if the little window units strain under the load of a super hot day....See Morepossibly adding an enclosed front porch
Comments (6)I don't think adding a porch will reduce traffic noise enough to make it worth allocating any budget towards that project. Also keep in mind that you will likely get more used to traffic sound over time after being in the house. I think investing any budget in other solutions to more directly reduce the sound (e.g. insulated windows) or even inexpensive solutions to mask the sound (indoor wall fountain, music, etc.) or in landscaping to make the home the most charming in the area would be a better route....See MoreWhere to begin with enclosed porch insulation?
Comments (6)Since you bought the house last year, can we assume your local municipality did not object to the addition to your house? If so then improving it should not be an issue. You may still have to apply for permits depending on what you do. It is hard to believe someone would build an addition with a door, windows and electric service outlets and install no insulation within the wall cavity It possible, but highly unlikely. If this was built with a permit application, then ask you code official if he has any drawings showing how it was built. It may have information about insulation. Trying to bring in the duct work from the main house through exterior brick is not an easy chore. I think this would be a good application of a mini split system. A single head could service the whole room. You would have an independent thermostat to set the heating and cooling. You can set back the thermostat and save money when you are not using the room....See MoreWant to enclose toilet in M. Ba. so it's a "privacy" toilet space. How?
Comments (59)Understandably, no one noticed when I wrote yesterday, I believe, that I may have lost the house due to the Seller changing to a different buyer, higher offer. Sigh. Still negotiating. But anyway, yes Debbie, that's exactly the pic. Thank you! It wouldn't let me copy it or paste it as I normally would. Is there a "trick" to doing that? Using a Dell laptop. Anyway, the larger window is far back enough that the door and enclosure would not impede the window. M. Miller: there are two full baths in the 1900 sq. ft. house, 4 BR. I think many (but some did) didn't get that it's also that I don't LIKE using a toilet *out in the open* when I've never had to before - always, always had a private toilet so I'm used to that, I think it LOOKS a lot better in a bathroom and it's MY preference. I typically have a small cab mounted on the back wall over the toilet for supplies. Such vitriol from a few over a TOILET!! Ridiculous. Yes, I'm guessing $2-3,000 + for doing this. I'm hoping only the rear piece of glass would have to be removed, then exchanged with a frosted piece to match the fabricated door, of course....See Moredrav2012
