Comments (13)I think a very large niche...with arched top like your wall niche picture or not...could look great along that wall. BUT...only if you do something to make it stand out. I'm thinking of something like a mosaic or different tile motif similar to what folks do behind the range in the kitchen. If it is simply tiled in white subways like the rest of the shower, I fear it will also look, as you say your current shelf does, like an afterthought. But if you put some other tile in there, it could look WOW! Don't know what the rest of your bathroom plans are, so I hesitate to suggesst something specific. But perhaps picking up the tone and texture of the tumbled travertine on the floor? At the very least, I would suggest tiling the shelf of the niche in the floor tile. I'll see if I can find some pics too....See MoreDesign help needed for bathroom closet/cabinet
Comments (11)Mine is only 10" wide. This is a Rev-a-Shelf unit that my cabinet maker had to replace and make a custom unit instead. It only had a center track and it never closed properly, but it was a new design three years ago, and they may have worked out the kinks since then. These and the Hafele units come in several widths and heights. Notice that I have a deep cabinet over top. On my custom unit, the top and bottom shelves are 4" deep drawers. That would be better for the bath than metal bars so that smaller items don't slip through. But you could load that up with TP, cleaning and bathing supplies, hair dryers, etc., and have some flat shelves for towels. The shelves on my pantry have a small lip, unlike the metal bars shown here. The commercial pull-out pantries aren't cheap, but it looks like you've used nice finishes in the bathroom already. You might be able to have a door made to match your vanity. Barker Doors here in Oregon is one source....See MoreI need my bathroom back - Design help needed!
Comments (10)Pocket door for sure, is this the only bathroom in the house? I would never have a bathroom with 2 access points so if the only bathroom I would close off the bedroom access and live with the fact there is no ensuite . If this is an ensuite close off the hall entry .Then your layout looks fine. Good lighting is the next thing to address and I like lots of good lighting in a bathroom that includes over head pots and a couple of over the mirror Halogen 150 watt or the equivilant LED fixtures the pots on one switch the over the mirrors on another. This is one of my favorite fixtures for above mirror it is called Oxygen halogen is very afforadable and I think Lowes carries it in the US.I like your idea of the dark floor and shower floor just remember the shower tile needs to be smaller than the floor tile so make sure the tile you choose comes in the 2 sizes.I love the inspiration pic....See MoreDesign Help Needed: enlarging bathroom and combining two bedrooms
Comments (35)LisaMac- JuneKnow knows. What is that saying about throwing good money after bad? Not that your house is bad of course, it is perfectly fine as is, but just not for your current needs. It would be great for another family at a different stage of life. Do you think you can just hold on and do a serious search for a one-story home? Would you be willing to look outside your immediate neighborhood to find it? How aggressive would you be to look? If I were in your shoes now, I would drive around every single weekend and if you see a ranch house that looks to be the size you want, slip under the door and in the mail box index cards you had printed that says something like, "My husband and I really like your house! If you are thinking of selling your home, please contact us, we are interested in purchasing it to live in, please contact us. Sally and Joe Blow, Phone, email." Then you may get contacted by the owner or the real estate agent as these people decide to sell, or if they pass away. You can also contact a real estate agent that specializes in the geographic area you want and tell him/her that you need a one story home and specify the other things you need, e.g another full bathroom and bedroom not right next to the master but not at the other end of the house that will allow you to dress without awakening your husband. Or whatever it is that you want. For sure, you are not the only couple with different schedules, you may find what you are looking for. The other thing is, assuming you are willing to sell your house and buy another house that is all on one floor. Are you willing to compromise to get that one-floor house, such as less bedrooms? Even if grandchildren sleep over, you can use bunk beds, kids love those. Even bunk beds with trundle beds. If your husband needs a workshop you can have one added to the back yard with a big shed with electricity added to it unless you find that miracle of a three car garage. So you can do a three bedroom house instead of a 4. it is something to think about, because it seems the pros here have told you that you can't achieve the re-model you want with the money you have to spend on it. (One thing you should know, just because someone doesn't have PRO next to their name doesn't mean they aren't a professional. Some people prefer to be anonymous.)...See MoreRelated Professionals
