Kitchen sneak peek/ Backsplash opinions
Comments (27)I chose to do snow white for the grout (debated between that and the bright white). I'll post a picture after it's grouted. Francoise...the corner cabinet is going to stay open. That was a last minute change to our plan when our cabinet maker suggested an articulated door for the corner uppers. I don't care for the function/feel of a hinged door so I spontaneously decided to have an open corner. I tweaked it a bit after seeing remodelqueen's corners on the hidden gems thread and set it back an inch so it wouldn't look like a cabinet without doors (boy do I love this website!). I'll post more pictures of the cabinets once everything is in....See Morestuck on backsplash & come take a peek at my new barstools!!!
Comments (34)Deeageaux, I think our price is around $10.00? Thought I saw something very similar at home depot or lows so I'll hit those places this morning. Our you getting your kitchen done too? What cabinets are you getting? This is the only place I have seen it for less that $13.95... http://www.ceramic-tile4u.com/catalog.php?&s_brand=22&s_Series=&s_Series=Rixi But you have to buy at least 200 sq ft. I have not seen anything anywhere near the same at my three local Lowes. Their crackle is ugly. A few large "cracks";seems more like broken tile. Local guys have to pay Los Angeles rent so.... If your source has somewhat reasonable shipping rates I would love to read about it. Yep,getting my kitchen renoed. Creamy white uppers with expresso stained cherry lowers. Silestone Yukon Blanco or Tigris Sand counters. I have not decided yet. My suggestion to anyone that can't afford this tile .... don't be a looky Lew. Don't get a sample. Your heart will ache with unrequited love LOL....See MorePartial kitchen reveal / Backsplash advice needed
Comments (12)Thanks everyone!! dianalo, thanks for the suggestion re:Remodela's backsplash (very nice!). Not sure I understand about going higher than 5.5" for a ss backsplash. If we went with a soapstone backsplash, we were thinking of 5.5" up to the window trim and then stepping it down to 4" for the rest of the perimeter. lavendar lass, we're definitely going for a more traditional look, although the ceiling is a bit more contemporary more by default. We've even considered attaching some beams in the vaulted ceiling to give it more of traditional look. The ceiling will likley remain white but, we'll be painting the walls (either a green or light gray). We are looking to use some simple window treatments (shades?) . We also have a couple of pendants from Barnlightelectric for over the peninsula. Hope this helps give you a feel. Thanks mpagmom. It's good to hear that all-tile backsplashes aren't a problem for cleaning. Is that true for behind the sink and range also? Thanks palimpsest, we're definitely going for more traditional as mentioned above. If you only have the soapstone under the window and glass over the range, are there generally problems with with just drywall everywhere else? Someone mentioned that variations in the wall may leave some separations between the soapstone counter and the drywall. Is that a real concern? One complication is that we really need to finalize the soapstone layout and let them know if we want any soapstone for the backsplash. It might be easier if we could decide after the rest of the kitchen was together. Keep your thoughts and suggestions coming as we're still searching....See MoreIs this backsplash too "busy?"
Comments (54)Wow, thanks so much for the additional input! I appreciate that some of you weren't afraid to say that the backsplash is too busy for your tastes. Hearing a variety of perspectives is helpful. I also now have some terrific ideas for pulling everything together: painting that blue wall white (although a wooden bench will go there, along with a kitchen table), bringing in white accessories to mellow the blue, adding plants, etc. To answer the question about tile, this is the Jute glass collection from Ann Sacks. It was very reasonable at under $20/sf. Our installer needed to back butter each tile and to really pack in the grout to make sure that no black lines showed through at the bottom of the tiles. He did a great job, so that concern is off the table. I think I figured out that I am partially bothered by the style and color of the tiles for a kitchen. I actually have the same tile (1 X 2s in just the aqua color) in my bathroom, and they are perfect in that space. However, something about the color combination of these tiles--along with the texture--does not feel kitchen-like to me. It does not have an "earthy" feel that I sometimes prefer in a kitchen. The tiles are also very contemporary, and I tend more towards a cottage or beachy style. Too bad I have to doubt one of the more expensive items to change! Again, I SO appreciate all of the encouragement and input! I am hoping that I will come around as I hate to think about broaching my husband with this topic. :-) Sara This post was edited by NewEnglandSara on Sun, Jan 18, 15 at 10:41...See Moredaisychain Zn3b
