Master bathroom design can it be better (xposted)
I've crossed posted this in the bathroom forums but theres not that much traffic. I have a small master bathroom planned but I am just wondering if there is a better layout option for this tight space. The interior room is 8 x 14. I cant not enlarge the room at all. I also can not take space from the safe storage room or bedroom.The plan is to have a clawfoot/slipper tub, a separate shower and dual sinks.
Is the best layout or could it be better.

Comments (25)bullielove and motherof3inct - Yes, the Linen Cabinet was also built custom and to match the vanity - drawers same height and same wood/finish. The original Linen Closet had an 18" bi-fold door, which really only opened about 15", with wire shelving inside. The door was standard 80" height. We opened the width to 24" and the height to 96" for this cabinet. It is free-standing, though anchored, and the frame is scribed to fit as if built-in. Enduring, I think "StuporMan" may be more appropriate than superman. lol LTL, I simply converted your drawing to a jpg then used the stamp tool in photoshop to make the alternative views of your original design. Fast and furious, it took maybe 10 minutes to do the three versions. As you can see, you can do a lot of flipping and flopping to the layout. Moving the door to the sidewall will probably require a smaller door. But it's simply a matter of you analyzing how you'll use the room and what will work best for you. If you did put the sink in front of the window, a simple option is leaving the window "as is" and using a top-down, bottom-up pleated shade inside the window. They come in near-sheer to almost opaque materials. The TDBU shades are great for bathrooms, as you can have the bottom down to the sill but drop the top down a bit to still allow some light but eliminate sight lines into the bathroom from outside. Comments (16)circuspeanut, That makes total sense. And I totally agree that it's a better layout. But---- we're really having renovation burnout now. As you know we started demoing the main living area a year ago.. and we're still installing trim and living with doorless cabinets and plywood counters in the pantry. And that's spending every second of spare time on it! So, I'm trying to find a good compromise between making this cruddy bathroom work and look better, and not making huge amounts of extra work for DH. He's the plumber and electrician. He's already groaning about moving the door.... but I do think that will be a pretty dramatic improvement over the floor plan we have now. We've decided to do a new tub/shower combo, and he was relieved that that meant he didn't need to break into the 1950's drains to move the toilet. :)...See Morebathroom design advice, pls - xpost
Comments (21)Thanks, mayflowers! I met with my KD this morning. It was a very productive meeting. Chose the tile pattern for the shower (B), decided upon the Kohler shower pan in Sandbar (Dune is a close runner up) and the lay-out of the shower fixture and the bench (angled, ending 9" shy of the glass to make install easy and also easy to clean the glass), mirror sizes, light mounting heights.... Yep, we knocked my "but what about" list down to size. Yay! She said toe testers were done all the time in Canada when she lived there (was a KD there, too) but they aren't done as often here, for whatever reason. I don't think it will be necessary for us to have a toe tester because of the fixtures we chose and where we're installing them. I'll review our plan when I take showers this weekend to see how the new set-up will work and see if there are any hiccups with it. This afternoon, I went out to United Tile up to check out alternative accent tiles. Yep, your comment about the brown in the mosaic got me thinking. I asked a rep at Contractors Furnishing Mart this morning and she said, "yes, it can be variable and you might end up with more brown than blue tiles." Uh, oh, don't want that, especially since the brown is a golden brown, which doesn't work well with the shower pan color and other choices. I came home with 4 to consider but as soon as I got them in my light, I immediately kicked 2 out of the running. One was wishy washy and the other was holy guacamole bright! I forgot to ask pricing but unless it's out of this world outrageously expensive, it's likely going to be doable since we don't need a lot of it, our install pattern is uncomplicated and our other choices are easy on the budget. Choice #1 is Lunada Bay, Tozen series, in Iodine, in 2 finishes. Here it is in silk (non-glossy). Here it is in natural (shiny). I'm leaning towards silk. Tile choice #2 is also Lunada Bay but in the Agate series in Pisa, silk finish. The sample I brought home reads more green than what I saw in the store and than it is in the above pic but my sample is 1/2 x 4 brick so there's not nearly the color variation as there at the store and in the pic. Aquarius may or may not work but there were other yummy colors in the same series of glazed tile so I'm sure to find a color for the 1/4 round. There can be color variation in these, too, but they shouldn't go brown at all. They might be more green than blue or vise versa but that's not a problem. Thanks, mayflowers, for voicing your concern. If you hadn't, I would never have known that my original choice could end up with a lot more brown in it than I want. Your biggest problem is the lack of elbow room at the lavs. I can't do anything about that. Would you really use them both at the same time?

8 years agoThis is an 8x14 bathroom. That's pretty big. Remember, a very simple three-piece bathroom can be 5x8 (comfortably).
This bathroom is not quite 3Xs that large -- okay, my photo is a poor representation because it has all that space between the three bathrooms ... but the point is that if you had one more foot of width, this space could literally hold three bathrooms -- it's not small.
So why are we thinking it's small? Because the fixtures -- especially the tub -- are drawn in oversized proportions.
Using the closet as a size indicator, I switched out the deck tub for the clawfoot that the OP says she wants: This red oval represents a typical clawfoot -- about 30" wide and 5 1/2' long. Note how much more space is left around it. You could steal width from this bathroom /enlarge the bedroom and closet a bit and still fit the tub in comfortably.
Having said that, I do think the two sinks are too much for a vanity that width. It's much better to have one comfortable sink with drawer space beside it than two cramped sinks where two people can't stand side-by-side anyway.So where's all the space in this bathroom? It's empty, walking-space right in front of the door. Somehow the pieces don't arrange nicely (unless you move the closet or the bathroom door) to avoid this.
I also agree with the above poster that the closets are massive space-wasters. The larger of the two requires 50 sf to obtain 10' of hanging space -- and reaching things at the far end won't be convenient. If this were reduced to a reach-in, it would be 20 sf to obtain that same 10' of hanging space. OR if she could add just another 12-18" to the width of the closet, she could hang clothes on both sides, doubling her storage. But as it's drawn, it makes no logical sense.
My overall assessment: While they're drawn out neatly, this whole arrangement -- closets, bathroom -- doesn't work. I say toss it out, let go of the "must haves" and start rearranging things in a completely different manner. Try the safe room where the small closet is. Try the bathroom where the big closet is. It can only improve.
"Safe" rooms are safer if they are not labeled "safe" and not published.
If Sabrina were passing this drawing around among her co-workers, I'd agree with you. However, since we don't know her real name or where she lives, I think she's pretty safe. Her screen name makes us suspect she lives in Texas -- or is from Texas -- or maybe went to college in Texas -- or plans to retire to Texas -- but I don't think that's going to give us much of a head start on burglarizing her. I think she can rest safe without fear from any of us burglarizing her.

8 years agoWow Thanks Mrs. Pete and everyone else! The vanity should be at least 6ft long, enough for two sinks and some storage. Anyways I've submitted the changes to our designer and am now waiting for the updates.
This is the bathroom I submitted. I feel good about this one. It even gives me a linen closet! We're going to do a pony wall between the toilet and tub.
I also get what everyone is saying about the closets, I really do. I have no problem with reach in closets but our builder and designer said it would be better to have a smaller/ narrower walk in closet for resale.

The most recent design you posted severely crowds all of the fixtures as well as the entry door and chops up the room for the sole purpose of adding a small linen closet.
Perhaps you could put the towels on wall racks or under the counter.
It is always difficult to draw plan without a scale drawing but that is the problem with JPGs. The shower looks to be only 32" wide.
You should always show the windows in a plan.

Your designer is arguing against math. Math is never wrong.
I like this new layout. It reduces the wasted space in the middle and gives you decent access to each bathroom component.
Who is "us"? I have no idea who is reading this thread. There is a very
good chance that someone that knows of Sabrina is reading this.I doubt it.
