Anyone with dorm style bathroom?
Comments (20)Chris - the vanity wall will definitely be standard vanities with undersink storage. It was more the 3 sink/towel tower idea that we are borrowing. I saw that pic from Pottery Barn and really like it. Thanks! Unfortunately, our "dorm" layout is such that the beds actually are cubbied into dormers. There are two opposing dormers across from each other (one on the front of the house and one on the back), and a 3rd space at the end of the room. The entire space is over the garage. We are thinking of incorporating something similar to this pic from houzz.com though the ceilings will not be slanted. [[(https://www.houzz.com/photos/bon-voyage-traditional-kids-richmond-phvw-vp~102943) [eclectic kids design[(https://www.houzz.com/photos/eclectic-kids-room-ideas-phbr1-bp~t_24653~s_2104) by richmond interior designer Ben Dial Each bed will be built up with drawers for clothing storage (socks, underwear mostly, as the rest will be hung in the walk in closet), and may have curtains across the bed for privacy, since two will be across from each other and looking directly into each other. The heads of the beds will be separated by the dormer window. The cubbies will be wired for a light inside (our girls love to read in bed), and will also have the "window" cutout at the end to see out and across the room to the other set of beds. Inside will have a shelf or two for books, animals, etc. and we may do a small set of shelves (or a desk?) at the end on the outside. Tadr - your idea is interesting, but increasing the bathroom numbers affects tax assessments and our sewer needs, even though the actual number of fixtures remains the same....See MoreWill all these fantastical bathroom/closet ideas fit in my space?
Comments (5)I don't have a similar bath setup, but I would love to! :-) Well, I imagine I would love to but in reality that is not the life I live. So, none of the following comments come from any practical experience, as opposed to daydreaming! I think you already have a great starting point, but I am having a hard time reading some of the items on your sketch. Are you trying to fit a tub AND shower in the space, or just a tub? Is that a 51" tub? I couldn't make out the "???? station" in the closet. Personally I would prefer the entry from the bedroom to be at the bottom where it is shown in the designer's sketch, rather than by the window wall. That way you can't see in from the bed, and I think it would make sense to have the entry close to the hallway if your daughter will be joining you. Is it important for you to have a distinct bathroom and a separate closet/dressing room, or would you be open to a bit of blurring of the functions? Using the designer's sketch for reference, would it work for you to put the linens and hamper in that vestibule, the clothes in a more traditional "closet" at the bottom right, have a dressing/vanity area where the closet is drawn and the toilet and tub "wet room" in the same general area now shown? If you put the tub under the window you could put the toilet by the closet where the plumbing wouldn't be on your daughter's wall. You'd still have rooms, but it would combine the dressing area with the bathroom rather than the closet. Good luck!...See MoreUpdate on bathroom remodel - contractor has apendicitis
Comments (50)I do think the Allen wrench is metric, since the diverter was made in Germany, and I will look into getting some metric Allen wrenches, if we do not have any at our house in Los Angeles. I will take what we have here to see if any will work, but it would have been convenient if the contractor had left the Allen wrench that came with the fixture. I do have the instructions, such as they are, and they have essentially no text with them - only illustrations, and so it is better to go to Youtube for information on the adjustment. I'm sure it is simple and something that I can do myself, once I have the correct wrench. The contractor called me today and said that the glass doors in the master bathroom are already installed, but he thinks there is an issue with the hinge at the bottom because it makes noise and the door is more difficult to open inward than outward. The glass company installed the doors - the contractor never intended to do this himself, and while he sounded a bit weak on the phone, he said he was feeling well enough to oversee what is being done. Unfortunately, the glass door installers damaged a tile in the hall bathroom, and so now that has to be replaced, which will happen tomorrow. The glass company will pay for this to be done of course, but the door should be reinstalled this week. Anyway, I will go on Friday to see what is being done regardless. We have lots of extra tiles, and so that is not an issue, but the contractor told me that the bottom hinge on the second glass door also appeared to have an issue. I let him know that I would not accept hinges that are not proper, as I do not want to have issues later on. I also told him that I am in no hurry to get this completed, but he is because I will not give him his final payment until the work is completed to my satisfaction. There is no need now to get a shower curtain....See MoreHelp! Lighting assistance for Kitchen Island and Bathroom Vanity
Comments (21)I asked about guidance of height in consideration of husband s height and out lower ceilings. Forgot to mention I've read 50 articles on placement and I have the general area down, as well as looked at 800 lights myself. That wasn't helping, it's why I asked a direct question on height and size as gave my own direct measurements. A little guidance or a probing question is more helpful than ”your tile is awful” or ”just read the chart” because not everything falls into the chart. In a kind sense, I'll just say you seem to be a woman of strong opinions and great confidence in them. Perhaps I should have note of those traits, but I'm certain they should always be mixed with consideration and kindness. Something like ”perhaps your topic is over broad, consider are-asking just a, b, and c and include just this and we may be able to communicate better.” I've read and used a million HOUZZ articles as we approach being 3 or 4 weeks out from competing a house we designed and built almost entirely ourselves, self contracting the entire thing. I've now nailed down a stone person who just does counter tops and dropped a couple who seem to be just kitchen designers. I'm trying to decide between a couple styles of lights that I am learning terms for each day, and deciding size from a chart when your island is both super long (12 ft) but narrow 40 inches) is tricky, and I want to be sure that the style I choose will provide enough light to work with as we cook a lot. That involves narrowly down by practicality of styles, and not having used them and getting very little info on sites and even worse search engines, it is overwhelming. In the bathroom I'm not sure if, considering the sink is to one side of the countertop near the tower, the lights going over the too of a mirror would be better to go completely across the vanity portion or just centered over the sink with shelves to the side. If the latter, unsure if there is a way I can use sconce lights or no. Majorly, as wires are being pulled SOON, I needed to know the placement for him to do so, three large or two medium on island, and how to place lights and mirror over sink. I can pick them out fine once I figure that out. You were under no obligation to have helped, but a tone that was at best brusque and dismissive, and possible ruse, to myself as well as the other gentleman, must serve you well in your field I guess, I just don't see how. Perhaps it's all me as a first-timer. If so, my apologies. It took a lot for me to even try to ask the questions, and my apprehensions seem justified at the moment. I do appreciate your trying. Have a blessed day....See MoreErrant_gw
