replacement or new construction ... and more ?'s
Comments (57)Are you sure you have Andersen windows to begin with? I was not aware of any situations where Caradco (now Jeld-Wen) was making anything for Andersen. It is likely that you just have the Caradco window. In terms of what you have in aggregate efficiency, it is probably about a R-Value of 1 - 1.25. If your existing windows where properly sealed, relatively airtight, and not rotting, there would be zero rationale from the standpoint of energy savings to replace them with new insulated unit. Just improving the R-value/U-Factor in that window from and R-1/1.5 to an R-4/5 would take decades to payback and any benefits for solar control could more cheaply be supplied via applied films. In terms of what we want for this region, you want the lowest U-Factor you can get in any application. Whether you are a triple pane candidate depends largely on whether or not you are okay with the slightly darker window. If you were wanting to take advantage of the passive solar, you could go with a standard 2-coat low-e on the South facing windows and leave the triple pane to the other elevations. In a coastal application, the larger impact on efficiency (if you are comparing two similarly outfitted windows with Low-e) is going to be on air-tightness. That applies to how the window was both installed and how tight the window is. When we talk to clients about windows, we usually stick to the 4 aspects of: - Thermal resistance (U-factor) - Air Tightness (Air infiltration) - Visible light (VT numbers and profile thickness) - Warranty Feel free to ping me with any other questions....See MoreOkna vs. Alside
Comments (9)We decided to go with the Insul-Tec deluxe with Low-E/Argon which has a U-factor of 0.25 and SGHC of 0.30. The Okna 500 series also has a VT of 0.55 and Condensation Resistance rating of 62 according to NFRC. We were quoted $11K for 18 windows in total installed for work to be done in the NYC Metro area: 12 DH (7 - 30"W x 49"H, 1 - 30"W x 41"H, 1 - 27"W x 37"H, 1 - 24"W x 36"H, 1 - 23" x 36"H, 1 - 41"W x 49"H), 4 Double Sliders ( 1- 36"W x 35"H in the kitchen, 3 - 64"W x 62"H in the family room), 2 - 68"W x 50"H 3-lite Casements (all vent). Did we get a good deal or did we overpay? We originally thought about getting a 2-lite casement instead of a double slider ( 36"W x 35"H) in the kitchen which is what we have now, but the salesman convinced us that it would not look that great since the frames in the middle would meet in the casement and create a thick middle. While I could see what he was saying, I don't know if he was just saying it because he didn't want to give us the two lite casement for the same price or what. He did offer as an alternative an awning window or 1-lite casement for the kitchen window at the same price as the double slider....See MoreSimonton - New Construction v. Replacement
Comments (11)Personally, I appreciate toddinmn's comparison. What makes it relevant is the pricing of the Simonton 5500 is comparable to the Sunrise Essentials. I love my Sunrise Verde's just installed as replacements in my house, but I found this thread researching new construction options for my daughter. Her budget does not allow for Sunrise unless it is the Essentials line. The Simonton 5500 quote was comparable to the Essentials. It's silly to suggest that "it's not saying much" to offer a comparison between the Simonton 5500 and the Sunrise Essentials - which for both I was quoted approx. $10,000. That's a much more valuable comparison than only telling me that the $17,000 Verdes are better than the $10,000 5500s....See MoreSunrise, Soft-Lite, Okna, Simonton
