Stainless Steel Blanco sink vs. Luxart

Hi. We are down to the nitty gritty in our pluming selections. My plumbing rep, trying to be mindful of the budget, suggested the house brand, Luxart, for the kitchen sink instead of the spec'd Blanco SS 36". At first I was OK with it, but I am now second guessing the decision. The price difference is only $300, and since we are building an entire house, that difference is almost negligible. It is 16 gauge, but it is also only 17" wide, and the Blanco 18 gauge and 18" wide. I have ready the Blanco discussions here, but most of them center around the Silgranit sinks, which isn't exactly an apples to apples comparison.

Does anyone care to share their opinion?

I don't think it matters, but the Axor Citterio will be the faucet and it will be the only sink in the kitchen, located on the open island.

As long as your sink is strapped in place, changing your mind and your sink later won't be too much of a problem.

Really, for an undermount sink under Quartz? I guess I was under the wrong impression. So do you know anything about Luxart?

kiwigem - I honestly think that either the metallic gray or a stainless would be fine near the anthracite. I personally don't care for stainless steel sinks, so I would choose the silgranit. There's a thread on here from a few years back that shows breezygirl's metallic gray sink in her carrara (scroll down a bit), and also within that thread is a link to some other counters with different color silgranit sinks. I lean towards the practical side of things. So I am SS gal all the way! It will take just about any abuse you throw at at and still not be damaged. The thinner gauge ones may develop a dent, or they may become less shined, but they will still hold water. The only issue I’ve seen is the track for drop ins can rust out. And I wouldn’t recommend reinstalling one as the edges may not be true and flat anymore. The composite granites sometimes crack and can stain, depending on color and brand. As an example, I had a customer in who’s contractor had cleaned his brushes from paint priming in the sink and not cleaned it up. They were having trouble getting the primer off. In SS I would just use a green scrubby and that paint would have come off. Yes, I think the composite granite and quartz sinks can chip.

“When looking at stainless sinks, try to stay away from "Made in China". I have seen several of these stainless sinks rust when brand new!” This comment from @Dino Rachiele about rust is fearmongering. Also note that Kohler, Blanco, and Franke all sell good stainless steel sinks with their badges on them that are made in China. Rust in a stainless steel sink is not caused by the sink being made in China. It is caused by someone leaving something in the sink that itself rusts, such as a can or metal utensil, or frequently, tiny particles from steel wool pads. Steel wool pads must never be used to clean a stainless steel sink no matter where it is made. Rust can also be caused by the homeowner’s water if it happens to have iron in it. I have this issue myself of iron-heavy water that leaves rust spots in my custom 14-gauge Texas-made stainless steel sink. And so what?—the rust comes off in seconds with very little effort, using Barkeeper’s Friend and a sponge. People should buy the sink that is in their budget in the size they want, and if the manufacturer is a reputable one, including the popular Chinese-made sinks by Kraus, then they should not worry about rust in their sink.

There is no qualitative difference between the sinks. Both are made in China from 18/8 stainless. Many folks still think that Blanco, a German company, makes its own stainless sinks in Germany -- hence the high German prices. It doesn't.

Most of the stainless sinks sold by Blanco in North America are manufactured in China by Yingao Kitchen Utensils Co., Ltd., New Star Hi Tech Enterprises Co., Ltd. and Binoya Metal Products Co., Ltd. which also makes stainless sink accessories for Elkay. Both of these are ISO-9000 manufacturers with solid international reputations.

We know of no Blanco stainless sink made in Germany, or even in Europe.

Luxart, Hajoca's in-house brand, is an equally good 18/8 stainless sink for about 25-30% less because you are not paying a premium for the Blanco name on the Chinese sink. Luxart sinks re also made in China (or maybe Taiwan). Unfortunately, I can't remember right now which Asian factories make them, but I do recall that they also have solid international reputations and ISO-9000 certification.

Luxart sinks are priced like Chinese sinks, not like European sinks. Hajoca is the largest privately owned wholesale distributor of plumbing and heating products in the United States,. It stands solidly behind its in house brands. We have never had an issue with a Luxart sink (or faucet either), but if we did, I have no doubt Hajoca would take care of it.

As long as the thickness of the steel is the same (18 ga. at least, 16 ga. is better) go for the lowest price. It's the better deal.

Thank so both for your insight. I am going with the Luxart. I am never one who cares about brands, anyway. I just want a good sink.
