Ammonia is water soluble and can be poured down the drain. Just dilute it with plenty of water.

The University of Wisconsin Cooperative Extension says:

Share if possible. If you have a septic system, minimize both use and disposal of ammonia. Ammonia adds nitrogen to septic water discharges, which may contribute to health problems in drinking water.

It doesn't sound like something I want to risk.

Ammonia has so many household uses. I find it is always useful to have on hand, along with other natural cleaners such as vinegar and baking soda. Have you googled a list of possible uses? Perhaps you don't have to waste it after all.

Alisande, there are no specific directions because it's expected to be mixed with water and poured down the drain or toilet. That IS the proper method of disposal.

For septic disposal, I would dilute it in the sink or toilet bowl a half a cup at a time.....every few days.

You can also dilute it and apply it to your lawn as a nitrogen source. Diluted, even the essential microbes in the soil can feed on it. It is also quickly dissipated by evaporation.

Do you feel better about it now?

Okay, now if you still just want to get rid of it after all these good suggestions of how to use it, I assume even in the country you have a household waste disposal authority. Or a quarterly toxics roundup? Or even the fire department? It's easy in the city. They'd rather get it out of your hands lest you mix bleach and ammonia (or cleaners containing each of them). :)

Plllog, our rural community is sadly lacking in things like hazardous material disposal. We just got recycling pick-up last year; before that, I drove our recycling to a recycling center about 25 miles away.

My mother died from cleaning a rug (carbon tetrachloride), so I tend to be extra wary of chemicals.

Oh, Susan....I don't think that I knew that about your mother. How very tragic.

I wish that the ammonium hydroxide fumes weren't so horrid....but it reminds us to be careful about it, I hope.

You could start a new career washing windows! Could you dispose of it with your cat litter? The litter would absorb it so you wouldn't have to worry about it leaking.

We have a hazardous waste disposal site in our county and I was surprised that they told us we could dispose of paint that way - both latex and oil based - and then put it out with our trash for regular pickup

It might be a tad overwhelming to the garbage collectors, but they're the reason why I have the ammonia in the first place; they told me to add some to my trash to repel bears. I don't know why they said that, because later I learned the bears had a special fondness for my grandson's diapers.

I would dilute it and fertilize the garden or kill weeks on pavement by using it straight. Urine has urea that breaks down into ammonia, so flushing it will not harm the septic if flushed over the course of a couple of days. Remember what Erma Bommbeck said, "The grass is always greener over the septic tank!"
