I have a steep sloping site on the Central Coast and have selectively planted a lot of different natives. In the smaller gaps between the rocks I have planted a mix of native grasses, mainly different Lomandras and Dianellas. As for the grasses, at the base of the slope where it is likely to be damper I have planted L. hystrix, L. 'Tanika' and a few others. As it gets dryer further up the slope, I have planted L.'Tanika'and L. longifolia. I have also dispersed the following shrubs as well; Syzygiums such as S. luehmanii, S. australe "Pink Cascade' and others. These have been planted in areas where there is some residual moisture. You are likely to find residual moisture at the base of the rocks. Further up where it dries out more and there is a bit of sun, I have planted Banksias among the Lilly-pillies, such as B. spinulosa, (which happens to be my favourite) B. ericafolia and a few of the cultivars. Myoporum parvifolium is fine in areas that get limited sun although total shade may be a problem. I find when you plant in areas that provide opportunities for the above varieties of natives you end up with a very attractive natural look.

First, get rid of the ivy - it is considered a noxious weed in OR (and most other places in the PNW as well) and it is a habitat for rodents. Same with any English holly. Deer will graze various plants with thorns so that is not exactly a guarantee and rugosa roses need sun. Various evergreen shrubs should work for you - a spreading yew, sweet box (Sarcococca species), Pieris japonica and native huckleberries (they'll eat the berries but leave the plants alone) are all relatively deer resistant, however young animals will invariably sample anything and even the adults will test out things new to the garden to see if they are tasty or not so it is best to protect initially. You can also try underplanting with hellebores - completely deer proof - and hardy geraniums like maculatum or macrorrhizum which apparently haver an unpleasant taste. If your property is regularly traveled by deer - and most of us in the PNW experience their visits to some degree or another - try planting so that you leave pathways to prevent trampling of young plants.

Hakone Grass (japanese grasses or ornamental grasses) Ferns (Japanese varieties and woodland types) Heuchera (plenty of colors that will brighten that spot), Heucharella, and tiarella Hostas... there are so many beyond the commonly thought of green ones and the green and white ones. There are a great variety leaf textures and sizes some are large XL, med or small. Mostly grown for the lush leaves but they do flower once a season. They flower on tall stems/scapes humming birds like them mid summer to late summer depending on the variety. Some have flowers that do not open at all....( I do not know that ID of those hostas off hand- but folks on the hosta forum would know) The scapes can easily be snipped off to prevent flowering and thus leading to a more leafy plant (it is said the plant saves its energy). They are perennial and good-winter hardy, but they go dormant- for your growing zone (they can be grown as far north as zone 3). There are ground cover versions of hostas (that are low growing and spread) or the specimen type ones that clump/mound. They need well drained soil -so the rocky slope would seem like a great fit. They thrive in the sunlight conditions you mentioned (many people think they can only grow in shade- but it's that they tolerate shade better than most- but they do very well in partial sunlight, too. ) Check out the hosta forum on gardenweb for a sampling. :) Good Luck!
