Ordering 6 Q.of Swedens-- Roses Unlimited or DA direct?
Comments (15)Hi Sarabell Welcome to another Nebraskan gardener on GW! I totally agree that it would be best to buy your plants from Roses Unlimited for several reasons. First, RU has very substantial gallon-sized potted plants and own root are generally a better bet for our cold zone. Queen of Sweden grows well in my Lincoln yard on own roots. Austins don't tend to die to the ground for me, but in the early years they can get a fair bit of winter kill and you may need to trim them back in the spring to a foot or two. My two QoS bushes are quite tall (well over 6 feet) and narrow - maybe 2 feet or a little more wide. Second, I've had some of the problems Hoovb has mentioned from David Austin in their bareroots (grafted or ownroot). Even though Dr. Huey grows well in our alkaline soil, the plants from David Austin direct have a higher than average fail/death rate for me, and the last one I got from them (Munstead Wood) arrived bone dry and crunchy. Third reason, whenever possible I like to support our independent and smaller rose companies that sell quality products. We just lost Vintage Roses this year, and I like to do everything I can to contribute to the ongoing success of the great companies we have left. With the international craze for DA roses, that company isn't in any serious risk for the foreseeable future. Besides, Pat Henry at Roses Unlimited is such a lovely person and very helpful in discussing rose options with you if you need that personal touch. Finally, since you're in Nebraska, we could talk about adding your roses to a bulk order that Roses Unlimited offers that cuts half off the price of shipping. A rose buddy in Omaha and I have done this for several years to make up the 45 or so roses required for a bulk order, and with Vintage sadly out of commission, that shouldn't be a problem for a group spring RU order. I'm in Lincoln and would probably have them shipped here if you're interested, and then you could pop over and pick them up at an agreed-upon time when convenient in spring. If you're interested, feel free to email me privately at my GW email address (I think I have that enabled), and be patient as I only check that email address maybe once a month. Comments (6)MANY of these wonderful things have fallen from commerce here with the closure of the specialty nurseries. I'd sought Hugonis flore plena for the past two years. Every garden which grew it, lost it. Vintage supposedly had a mother plant and I offered to buy a sucker from it if they had one, but there was too much going on to hear back. It took two years, but there are buds of flore plena in a whip out front now. Originally, Xanthina was a double flower with the single version identified as Xanthina normalis or spontanea. I contacted every source asking about the petal count of their stock. All sources responded theirs were all single. Because the double form resulted from seed, I obtained imported Xanthina seed. I hope at least one of the seedlings out back flowers double. These things are worth growing, but most don't sell in sufficient quantities for most vendors to stock. Each is going to determine which sells best and is easiest for them to produce, then offer that one type. Good luck! I know what it's like to want something you just can't find. Comments (17)I just placed an order from HCR to take advantage of their 18% pre-Super Bowl sale. I ordered from the in the past. Yes, their plants are small when they arrive, but they are really healthy and take off like crazy. I think when I opened my first order with them years ago (Harrison Yellow) it was expecting the size one sees in nurseries. Don't let the size fool you, they are healthy and well rooted and will grow quickly. Besides, they are a very friendly bunch of folks to deal with, very helpful and knowledgeable. You won't be sorry at all in a few weeks. This time I ordered: Grande Amore Light of Day Jens Munk Aunt Honey Quietness Westerland Golden Gate I really like the Kordes roses and want to foray more into Buck roses as well. On a side note, a big thank you to all here who so willingly share their experiences with rose varieties, start very informative and interesting threads. You all are the greatest. Last fall when shopping sales I kept constantly checking out varieties on this forum to see if they had received good remarks on here. I call it my Rose Forum Peeps Seal of Approval! Or Massive Enablers for short..lol Thank you all!!!...See MoreRVR ORDER ON THE WAY!!!
Comments (23)No Dingo, I'll show you, pictures are better than words. I'm not complaining, like I said I would much rather have them to still be here as a nursery to order from not the $5 it's just something I've noticed since 2013 or maybe earlier, when I started ordering from them sometimes it more than $5 . I think they have like a chart they go buy for so many Rose's, but when they weigh them, and get the click and ship thing, they dont notice the difference. That could be it Shelia, must be. As a matter of fact, I'm sure of it, now that you said that. As I said, no harm, I'll just get it later. Now that I think about it, James must have been good with computers. Cause I think he added Rose's to my order before. And maybe Dario doesn't know how. I sure understand, I'm not computer savvy either, but they could have just charged my card I would think, for the one rose, since it doesn't add much shipping, but its fine. He may not have thought about it like that. Ok Dingo here's a picture, just to show you. I think the highest I ever got overcharged was like $8 but never said anything. I think there system maybe outdated or something. I know it may not seem like it, and some one who doesn't know me, may think I don't like them, or I'm complaining but I really do love them, and recieve awesome plants! The only plant I ever received that was not very good looking at all was a mystery rose.. And they have a awesome collection, and do a pretty great job, keeping up with it. I think I only had two mislabeled through all the stuff I ordered from them. Now last years Rose's, I'm still waiting bloom, but I'm about positive they will be right. Anyways I hope no one thought I was complaining, just was wondering about why they couldn't add the one on, which Shelia is most likely spot on about. And was wondering if anyone had noticed the other thing. This is just me and how I talk and how I am. My DH said I come across as intimidating sometimes to people, but I dont mean to be. I use to be very shy and didn't talk much, I've changed a lot over the years. So please never take anything I ever say the wrong way, I make just speak a different kind of English, lolwell a few cents less than five dollars, but now you can understand. I was charged $47.10 for shipping, the handling fee is separate. This is the box, it it shows the price for shipping on the box of $42.36. Like I said, it doesn't matter and I have never made a deal about, just something I have noticed along time ago. I was just curious if someone else ever noticed it....See Morecarriehelene
