Am I ruining my eggs by washing them this way?
Comments (18)OK. Perhaps I should have made it more clear: The fine creek sand that I used was not cold. It was fresh from the creek, but I did mix it with HOT water. I simply used it like sandpaper. I scrubbed about 12 eggs that way. I do NOT use that method any more. I do NOT use cold water in any part of my cleaning process, and I don't soak the eggs. I pour hot water over them in a wire basket, but I don't soak them. My birds are housed at night in a predator-proof coop with nest boxes lined with straw. They lay eggs in these boxes before I release them, and I have never had one laid on the ground. If an egg looked like a dirt clod I wouldn't use it. My ducks spend the day along our rocky, clean, cold, spring-fed, fast-moving mountain creek. My birds are mostly Welsh Harlequins imported directly from Holderreads Waterfowl Farm. I chose them for their egg-laying ability, which is reportedly equal to or better than a good chicken. I've had dozens of eggs so far even in fall/winter, and they taste great. I realize that as ducks (and chickens) age, their egg production decreases. I will deal with that later. I don't have the info in front of me now, but as I remember it, The North Carolina Egg Law applies its stricter rules for those selling over 30 dozen eggs per week. I will not ever come close to that, but if I did, my eggs are still cleaned in compliance with the law. I've been in contact with the NC agricultural authorities to be sure. I started this whole endeavor as a fun hobby to do with my young daughters, and I will sell at most a few dozen eggs a week at a local tailgate market. I'm not a commercial grower, just a stay-at-home-mom trying to reconnect with her farm roots. I appreciate where you're coming from, and I can see that you have valuable information, but I really don't need someone implying that duck eggs are "bad" just because they come from ducks. They're not. I'm trying to sell a quality product here, and this is simply meant to be a fun, educational bonding experience with my kids....See MoreWhat do you do with damp towels/ wash cloths?
Comments (6)You have many more towels than I do so this may not be helpful. When I come home from the gym I put the towels in the dryer for a few minutes, then I put them in a place away from the other clothes to wait until I have a load of similar items. This minimizes stinky wet towels sitting around and helps keep the germs contained. While I use my bathroom towels more than once I don't like to use gym towels again - never know what is growing on them. If you do hang them up wet be sure there is adequate ventilation in the room. Not just to the rest of the house but to the outside. For drying clothes I use a drying rack I got at QVC. It is called the Hangaway drying rack and it can hold a lot of clothes and towels while still leaving room for them to dry out. It might work for you depending on how much room you have....See MoreHow to wash towels/ rags used to wipe excess grout sealer?
Comments (9)Congratulations on your renovations! A word of warning! I too used the 511 Impregnator sealer, it is a good one. However, 2 coats may not be enough "if" the grout used was soupy wet like hotcake batter. While drying, air bubbles will escape leaving pin size holes in the grout. It will take several coats of sealer to fill the grout pin holes. Dirt will be very difficult if not impossible to remove from grout lines if you stop short of applying enough sealer to really seal the grout. The soupy wet grout is what many tile installers use because it is easier to apply the grout and easy cleanup. Yes, the sealer you are using is very expensive, at least it was when I used it ($85 a quart). Regardless of price keep applying until the grout is completely filled with sealer. Otherwise, you will always have a problem getting the grout clean. One way to test if grout is completely sealed after it has completely dried is to put a drop of water on the grout. If it soaks in it is not sealed. If it stands on top of the grout line it is sealed....See MoreWho has towels that once washed don't have any thread pulls??
Comments (17)I was thinking it could something else you put in the washer with these towels; items with zippers or snaps. But you wrote above that you wash towels alone, so that's that. The quality of textiles in general has gone downhill in the last couple of decades and even moreso in the last 5+ years. The quality that used to be, is absent. However, I've had very good luck with towels from Costco. The Charisma brand. I have an overly exuberant Speed Queen toploader that chomps up lots of items, except for the towels I get at Costco. I have a couple of snags like you mention here and there, but I wash whites/lights together which is mostly towels, undershirts, socks. But sometimes I'll throw in something else that fits the color catagory and it might have buttons, snaps or a zipper. Likely the once in a great while loop snag is coming from that....See MoreRelated Professionals
