Does this antique work - Master bath decor
Please don't tire of my posts! Y'all are the best for ideas and feedback.
At last, I have the final inspection for the addition and can begin putting things in the master suite.
The much-discussed temporary curtains are up -- French toile cafe on tension rods while I decide if there's a better option. My carpenter worked so hard on installing picture molding to give this bath a 1930's Parisian feel. He also did all of the tile work. The herringbone tile floor is heated, too.
The tub is a refinished 1933 pedestal.
This was my mother's tea cart and wash bowl/pitcher. I snipped some camellia and magnolia branches to see how the pitcher will work for flowers. I put the wash bowl on the bottom shelf to make it easy to grab bath linens from the cart.

The top is a removable glass tray. All original.
Does the cart work?
Should I leave it in the natural mahogany or paint it?

Comments (14)The second mat in teak is from Target and cost $20, which was more than the other bamboo one cost I remember. I do not remember where it is from, but notCB2 I know. I like your ladder shelf idea, something light an airy like that instead of a boxy cabinet. The ladder shelf has harsh angles. There is curvy shelving available too, that still has a Zen feel. This one is from Brocade. Imagine it filled with rolled towels and linen covered storage boxes, instead of the frosted cupcakes they show. (Why cupcakes?) Something like this would fill in the big blank wall near the toilet. The storage cube is from http://www.bobbyberkhome.com . It is a whopping $575 but Brocade Home has a similar one for $160. It does not have the mirror chrome base to give it that light weight look, nor the stud detailing. Maybe you could add that on your own. You could get an aluminum round cake pan for like $7 for the bottom and the little metal studs to glue on the pin points for a couple bucks. Get heavy duty 14 gauge aluminum pans so they have stability. Also check out electrical supply places that sell aluminum rounds. Believe it or not, those towels were from CB2 and I see now that they are no longer available. I was at Marshals yesterday and saw some towels that had rounds instead of rectangulars woven into them. Traffic sounds like it is a lot worse in the Keys than what I had last year and also will be HOT ! Have to be a lot more careful about burns . Please do look over on " the other side" occasionally. Comments (14)My two bathrooms are as polar opposites as you can possible get! I'll explain: My bathroom (the master ensuite is light (but not white marble, hex floors and white/light gray paint light). Moonlight "travertine like" porcelain floors and walls, Seatones (blue, aqua and sea green) glass tiles, Giallo Ornamentale granite and a light blue ceiling. Dark vanity. Crystal glass sink. The master bedroom and ensuite are totally different from the rest of the house and we're ok with that. Those are private areas. The rest of the house is done in rich warm colors, rich browns, pumpkin, deep golds, plum, dark sage green, bronze and black. DH's bathroom flows with the look of the rest of the house. His granite is mostly black, deep orange, dark gold. His glass sink is a Colbalt Copper color. Floor tiles and tub/shower surround is dark charcoal (basically black with accents of tumbled crema marfil and ORB metals). The walls were just finished today. A beautiful spanish knife texture with a glazed faux finish. Color is reddish bronzed over dark gold base. This is also the bathroom guests will use. It's bold and dramatic. He likes it. I like it too but I much prefer the tranquility of the Caribbean inspired color palette in my bathroom. Comments (14)Nothing wrong with mixing up colors. The colors should coordinate a bit so they flow from one room to another. My master suite is three rooms in an "L" shape, the sitting room is in the middle. All three rooms are open to one another with doorless archways, so they do flow visually. The center room, the sitting room, has deep red/burgundy walls and a cream/ivory trim color. Off one side of the sitting room is the bathroom. The the trim and cabinets are the same cream/ivory as the sitting room, but the wall are somewhat beige. Off to the other side of the sitting room is our bedroom. In there the walls are sort of a cream/ivory, and the trim/cabinets/wainscot is a deep muted historical green. The cream/ivory sort of ties the three rooms together and the other colors sort of bounce off that. For bathrooms which can be dominated by hard surfaces (fixtures/tile/stained wood) where the color of those items can be difficult or expensive to change, I usually recommend that those hard surfaces be a neutral or somewhat muted color. Then the wall color, or soft accent items like towels and throw rugs, curtains, etc, which are easy to change, be the stronger and sometimes more vibrant accent color. The hard surface colors in our bathroom are sort of neutral (cream cabinets and trim, beige walls, natural teak for the countertops and tub deck, tile is cream and charcoal), we change the color of the towels/rugs whenever we feel like it. Sometimes to a strong color; deep green, cranberry red, etc, sometimes to a soft neutral like beige, off-white, etc. And there is nothing wrong experimenting with colors either, especially paint. 8 years agolast modified: 8 years agoThe tub is 15 inches away from the window, so I can walk behind it to clean, open and close future window treatments, etc.
I had saved off this inspiration photo of picture molding and window treatments. I can go with any color in this bath as all the permanent materials are quiet -- soft grey and warm white.
I've wondered if plantation shutters 3/4 up for privacy, but leaving the top open for light, would look too "hard" all alone since there are so many hard materials in a bath. I'll wait until my furniture is in and decide.
I have a great view of my backyard, but unfortunately, as you can see in the uncovered window version of my bath above, that's my neighbor's chicken coop, so I need privacy from when they're out there (which is often). They have two teenage boys with a trampoline over there, too!
These panels are fixed to the side, so there's no rod across to interfere with the picture molding. I love the "fun" aspect of these drapes! The walls look to be an ice blue, but my bath is exposed to the north. I went with a custom mix of an old SW paint that I used in my previous home in 2005. My walls are SW Glass of Milk.

Pottery Barn, large beveled mirror. I bought on sale many months ago, but they still carry it. I love this mirror.

Toto Eco Guinevere Toilet (notice the skirt). I bought mine from Wayfair for $600+ instead of this list price. Free shipping. This is the first time since 1990 that I didn't build a separate water closet. This is for aging in place, open to the bath. I've got to get used to looking at a toilet in the bath!

RH Chatham Train Rack in polished nickel. Small towel bar and double TP holder are also Chatham.
RH Odeon Extra-wide Single Vanity Sink in white and carrara marble.
RH Anselme Medium Pendant (2) in weathered white. The beads are wood so that I didn't add more hard materials.
The sink and shower faucets are Delta Cassidy in polished nickel (too many links to find, I'm lazy). There is a rain head shower, then a handheld. The handheld isn't Cassidy, but it's also Delta.
The refinished tub, with the faucet, came from Ready to Re on Etsy.
Seta Porcelain floor tile, 6x24, in Silver from BestTile.
Bianco Carrara Marble subway tile in shower from BestTile.
The shower floor tile is porcelain, but there's no link available.
The glass shower enclosure was locally sourced to fit. It was the most expensive single item in the bath!

For privacy, could you look into frosted or stained glass, or a film? (I don't know how real these films look.)

8 years agoThis bath from Architectural Digest is another that gave me the idea to make my bath a room to be lived in.
My chair is an antique version of that one, without the tufting. Mine has long lost it's casters, but I can add those again.
What do you think of art on the walls?
Notice that the curtains are just fabric panels tacked up in a casual way. Very warm.

8 years agoI keep picturing a needlepoint rug, vintage or vintage-looking, with a black background in front of your tub. Something like this one that I've just found on Ebay for $295. Although our own master bath has no French leanings, but Spanish instead, I've had 2 needlepoint rugs in there for years. Love the vintage look they add. I also love the feel of them on my bare feet.

Here's the mahogany lingerie chest in the bath. I put a cobalt pitcher up there just to have something. I think a large blue & white ginger jar will be the thing.
I think the Victorian chair would be too much to add. The lingerie chest is more useful to me for storage and it doesn't crowd the tub or my vanity.
It feels very much like a room to live in. I like having furniture. I don't have a steam shower. There's a rain head and a handheld in the shower. There's good exhaust fan for the shower, too.

RH has a true "bath stool" in polished nickel with a white terry seat. Maybe too utilitarian!

I don't think any of these, even with reupholstery into better colors, will work in the bath.
I'm unpacking boxes and finding Spode blue & white vases; blue pottery, etc. I need to take an inventory of what I have, and have forgotten about, in this very long move. Things have been boxed up since May and June of last year.
