Need advice about a large stained glass window panel

Started working with stained glass this past year. Currently hoping to make a stained glass window for my patio garage door. Currently it has a plain glass pane, 28x24 inches. Wondering...can I make this window using the copper foil method without having problems? If not I want to stop now while in the design phase, if so, are there any words of wisdom from more experienced glass workers?

Hi there. I've been doing stained glass for many years. Yes, you can make a window this size using copper foil. I would suggest that you choose a wider foil. I have made some very large foil windows and have soldered copper wire, which bends and twists nicely, following the vertical lines of your pattern as reinforcement. If you are still hesitant, you can divide your pattern into 2 or even 4 and use perhaps an H zinc channel and design your pattern to carry through from one section to the next. It is not uncommon to combine both foil and H channels. Hope this helps and p-ost a picture when you're done!

Dear atouchofglass,

Your encouragement is appreciated. I have been using 1/4 inch foil which gives me thicker solder lines, and for me, is easier to handle. Also, the copper wire reinforcement is a great idea. And thanks again for responding. After posting many weeks ago I didn't think any information would appear before I finished the project. But, alas, with my busy schedule the window project is still very much in process and you input is very timely. I will get a picture uploaded when finished.

I am not an expert, but that doesn't stop me from having an opinion. (grin) I use an oil based primer when I am working on old exterior wood. And I use a slow dry oil based primer. But for something that will never be exposed to the elements and isn't old wood, I'm not so sure oil primer is going to make this paint project significantly better. I use Cabinet Coat for trim work. It is satin finish, though, not high gloss. You don't need to prime prime bare wood before applying Cabinet Coat - or maybe it is more correct to say that the first coat of CC is the primer. Need Advice For Fun Framing Project - liberating stained glass

This project is taking forever, but it is moving. We got the window out, I tried to pay someone else to reglaze but it was cost prohibitive so I am doing it myself. Stripped / sanded off all the stain, polyurethane & paint. Got all the old glazing out, and replaced the broken glass with new glass. I am now trying to figure out what kind of glazing to use. Everything I've picked up says not recommended for stained or leaded glass. I was told by the stained glass store that this is not leaded glass, but I'm building this sucker up from scratch and want it to last 15-20 years if possible so the wrong kind of glaze would really suck. I have DAP 33 (can), DAP 33 (latex based in tube), a sherman williams store glaze. How do people glaze stained glass and what should I do in this case? My window is primed and ready to go! Please help : )

Fleetwood. Western both mfg awesome aluminum. Just completed our third home with Fleetwood. @rogerc I've done two homes full of Fleetwood in that price range. There could be a significant cost for the beam above with posts and footings to support. At this span we're usually at steel with a moment frame setup depending on how many walls remain for lateral structural values. The imaginary rectangle around this unit needs to be very stiff and inflexible.

@Ely M Beautiful inside too! Gorgeous floors. Love those windows & would be a shame to hide any of the features of them on inside. I’m guessing windows are centered on the wall - looks off in picture but guessing that’s angle. I’ve never seen angled rods as @threers suggests. I also think any inside mount blinds would be custom & $$$$ due to shape & I don’t think outside mount fits these windows. I would go with drapes with the rod just above highest point on center window & with panels that split in middle & pull half to each side. I see the vent at lower right so you may need to use shorter length that ends just below sill. Even though the other window just like this one is evidently in another room, if you want to cover it at night, use same kind of drapes so the view is the same from street & the back side of drapes should be white. BTW, love the hanging light too!
