Avocado Growers

There should be an avocado grow program from the superbowl

Do you realize, with the Superbowl coming up..

If every
single person making guac this weekended saved their avocado pits, and
gave them to local schools for spring growing programs...

We
could potentially teach thousands or even tens of thousands of kids
about how seeds grow. Give them a really cool science project to look
forward to in school.
Think about
it. Right now, there are lots of schools throughout the country that
have no current growing program. But a lot of those areas still see the
influx of fresh avocados for the Superbowl every year. Kids that
normally would not see any sort of growing program could now do so..
thanks to football.

If people had leftover solo cups, or tubs and jars from dips and salsas.. cleaned out of course :) those could be donated too. For growing the pits in.

Support your football team through local farming.. Grow an avocado.
Support your local school through your love of Superbowl.. Get your
school on the avocado pit program.

So, it has been a while since I last posted. I've been a busy little bee... My avocados seem to be doing well. And I changed up the soil a smidge, combining a mixture from recipes made by both Al, and Josh!!! I have put them both into bigger containers, (pix to follow). Every time I pinch back a top, a new top continues to grow, so, I'm guessing these guys just wanna grow tall... I have a little problem with one of my beauties... The leaves are curling around the trunk. Any ideas?

I would doubt the pH meter is giving you an accurate reading. 5 seams low unless you have added Elemental Sulphur or something else to lower your pH. I would guess that your soil will be closer to neutral pH but I have been wrong before. Avocado trees have a mind of their own, sort of like Citrus trees. You can push the Avocado tree to really take off this time of the year but it does take alot of tinkering to get it right. If you do not want to deal with it and decide you don't want it, e-mail me and I will pick it up.

size and price is irrelevant ... you need to buy a named variety ... so that you can predict the output of the fruit[???] .. so that you can predict its genetic background ... which you can not do on a homegrown seedling ... e.g. ... presume you love red delicious apples .. then you go buy a RD apple tree .. which was grafted onto understock.. it will take a few years.. but you WILL end up with a RD apples .... if you take a seed out of a RD ... you will.. not unlike children .. get anything the family tree wished to dredge up ... lol .. but odds are high.. that it will NOT be a RD ... so if you really want a tree that produces a known quantity ... then go buy that tree ... and that may or may not be what the bigboxstore offers ... in CA.. its hard for me to believe.. that there are not specialty nurseries around.. that offer many many varieties of what you are looking for ... all that said.. avocado is not something i grow in MI .. lol ... so maybe that matters, and i have no clue on any of this .. but genetics matter ... so correct me if i am wrong ... but i doubt it.. lol .. now.. if you are just looking for a green tree .. and dont really care if you ever get anything worth eating.. go for the best bargain ... good luck ken
