Does Cat protect your vege garden and orchard from critters?
Comments (28)Ginger is just adorable!! If you have a cat that is a good mouser, they most definitely help keep the population of small rodents under control. That is what they were domesticated to do! Both houses I've owned were infested with mice when I moved in. Fortunately, both times I had a good mouser that took care of that problem. They have great patience, stealth, and determination; I watched a former cat wait for hours for a mouse to appear from under the refrigerator. This past winter was brutal - 7 feet of snow in 6 weeks - and the voles were having a field day under all that snow. There was an unusual amount of vole damage to my perennials. Also, the chipmunks are out of control this Spring. They are (or were) running around EVERYWHERE. My "good hunter girl" is taking care of this problem, catching them daily. I am conflicted about the fact that my cat occasionally kills birds too, and have taken great pains to locate the feeders and bird baths so that they are safe from the cat. However, cats are not the biggest killer of birds; by far, it is human destruction of their habitat, followed by collisions with buildings and other structures, windows, and cars. Cats are estimated to kill 200-300 million birds per year in the US; collisions kill up to 1 billion....See MoreMad at my curious cat!!!
Comments (8)I just want to chime in: Praise God you have a cat or cats! We lost our Maine Coon cat from the bad pet food, before the pet food recall, a few days before the recall. I miss him so much, he was always by my side when I gardened or did anything else. Enjoy your pets, and pet proof your plants. We have no pets at present, but our grandkids cats live at our place. They love to dig in where I plant new stuff, like the peas and lettuce. We just put chicken wire over the crops, and old metal refigerator shelves, etc. They hate that stuff, and I have had no problems for years now. Comments (14)I have also have a beautiful and sweet cat - two actually. They have waited until I thoroughly trusted they'd leave the seedlings alone and then munched them down. The "best" time this happened was the day before the seedlings were to be transplanted in the ground. The cats left the plants alone for 3 months, then the day before the blessed planting day, the seedlings became tasty cat treats; only to be regurgitated, a short time later, onto my carpet. Now I keep the plants safe from the felines, also in a guest room with the door closed. I have a table next to a south facing window for a seed starting, heating mat, and found the lid slightly off, crushing quite a few precious sprouts. The cats seem to think this heating mat is for their comfort......See MoreMaple Seedlings,Protection from Heavy Rain etc,Gardengal;Mike;Houzi !!
Comments (6)I agree with houzi :-)) I didn't respond initially as I don't grow maples from seed (or anything else for that matter!!) so not the best person to be giving advice about seedlings......even with plants I am very familiar with, like JM's. My suggestion is to just water as needed, seedlings or larger trees :-) Not very specific advice, I know, but it is pretty sound. There is far more danger to be had by overwatering than underwatering, so I would err on that side of the spectrum. A good barky planting medium will help a lot, as it speeds up drainage but if heavy rains are expected for an extended period, I might try some simple sort of cover over the seedlings on a temporary basis. And houzi, 'hot spells' are relative :-) What is "hot weather" to me would be considered quite mild to someone living in the deep south or the midwest, yet be hotter than what you might expect in the UK :-) We've had a pretty unusual spring as well with periods of abnormally warm weather (30C+/90F which is unusual for us even in the middle of July or August, let alone April and May!!) and a marked lack of rainfall. Some of my maples are not looking all that great because of the atypical weather conditions. You have to go with whatever routine works for you!!...See MoreHumsi
