My 5 year old beautiful fig tree also did not survive the winter in DC. Thankfully i see new growth coming up from the ground. The advice i got from an arborist was to check the branches to see if any of the tree is alive and cut down anything dead. Scrape a twig with your nail or a small pocketknife to reveal the layers beneath the bark. Dead twigs will be gray or brown inside. A living tree has a green cambium layer immediately beneath the outer bark and green, white or cream-colored wood inside the twig. Check several twigs in different parts of the tree to ensure the entire tree is dead. good luck!

I encoutered the same problem couple of seasons ago when the soil was too wet. Too much watering. Now I take a cutting and just stick it in a 1/2 gallon pot that contains %80 Pime Grow and %20 Cow manure compost and water a little to keep the soil moist but not wet. They grow very nice. Also I don't use any ziplock bags or doems to keep the humidity high, used them before and had lots of problem with molds. To see if you need to water them, go by the weight of your container. What I mean is, just lift your pot before watering and see how much does it weight (you don't need a scale), then add few ounces of water then lift it and see how much it weights. Whenever you lift your pot and it feels light, usually after a week or so, then water them. I water my cuttings (all are branching now) every 10 days or so, only about 5 ounces. Al Tapla would you be able to tell me what is wrong with mine? I've had this tree four four years and never had any trouble with it but now I am killing it! I wanted it to grow more branches so I pruned it and moved it to a sunny-er spot and added grow lights and started fertilizing more regularly. Next thing I know, it's getting yellow blotches all over the leaves and sometimes red speckles and tiny pin holes. I found spider mites on a different plant, but I couldn't see any on this one, but I hosed it off and sprayed with dish soap in case it was mites. Then the soil was soaked and wouldn't dry and a week and a half later this leaf turned black and dry in the center. I thought maybe it was because the soil was wet too long. I freaked out, so just yesterday I did a full repot (never done this before) and added perlite and orchid bark mix to potting mix to get a grittier faster drying mix. I also cut off half of the leaves. It really doesn't look too happy today (droopy leaves and soft stems and even more red speckling on new leaves) I don't know if it's been given too much light, too much fertilizer, too much water, or is infected with mites, or all of the above. Anything you can suggest? The tiny pin-holes make me think mites are one the table but I hate to stress it out more if it's not that.
