I'm trying to choose a bathroom vanity (X-post from Home Dec.)

This is my first time over here on the bathrooms forum. I'm usually over on home decorating. I have posted the same question over there, but it was suggested I post here as well. The following is what I have posted over there. I'd also like to add that these 2 vanities we are considering are from Fairmont Designs.

DH and I are in the planning stages of an update for one of our bathrooms. The plan is to change only the vanity, mirror and lighting over the vanity. We have been out looking at vanities and have found two different styles we like, so far. Each, of course, has pluses and minuses. Here are the 2 choices:

#1 - We like the features of the drawers in this one, but our house is more traditional, so I'm not sure how well it suits our house.

The top drawer has two narrow "drawers" on either side. The middle drawer has a cutout to accommodate the plumbing. The bottom drawer is a full drawer.

#2 - The style of this one probably suits our house better, but lacks the drawer space.

The vanity will be in a hall bathroom that is a full bath, but really functions more as a powder room. It is the bathroom our guests use. DH and I have a master bath and are empty nesters, so the hall bath is no longer used daily by our now grown children. I keep going back and forth between these two vanities. I like the drawers in #1, but the style of #2. Which would you choose? Thanks for your help.

I like the first one. I think if you changed the hardware and faucet to a more traditional look that would work well in your home. Does it come with the counter top or will you be using a different one? That would make a difference too. Where did you find it? I'm hoping to remodel my main bathroom and it looks perfect for me--I have a traditional house too.

#2. Sounds like you won't be using it all that much. In this case, I say aesthetics trump function. #1 reads contemporary to me.

circuspeanut, That makes total sense. And I totally agree that it's a better layout. But---- we're really having renovation burnout now. As you know we started demoing the main living area a year ago.. and we're still installing trim and living with doorless cabinets and plywood counters in the pantry. And that's spending every second of spare time on it! So, I'm trying to find a good compromise between making this cruddy bathroom work and look better, and not making huge amounts of extra work for DH. He's the plumber and electrician. He's already groaning about moving the door.... but I do think that will be a pretty dramatic improvement over the floor plan we have now. We've decided to do a new tub/shower combo, and he was relieved that that meant he didn't need to break into the 1950's drains to move the toilet. :)

The only way I'd do a white floor is with gray grout but it could work if I could find a white to match the paint or if I color match the beadboard paint color to the tile. What if I painted the vanity a very very soft gray like BM Gray Wisp? What would you put on the shower floor? I had always thought I'd use some kind of river stone but it might be too much in such a small space. I don't think I want to do the tile on all the shower walls. I saw one shower online where they had the one feature wall all glass and then they had a simple tile in the rest of the shower with the glass also running up the middle of the short wall (floor to ceiling) where the shower head and handles were. They have that first tile in smaller mosaics. How about if I did the longer ones on the feature wall and something like 1x1's or similar in a strip going up the shower head wall and inside any niches we build? Could I use a smaller mosaic glass on the shower floor? I kinda like the idea of a seamless look.

Omg mdln, I love love love that. Love. I don't think the designers looked outside too much as what they thought would be a 5 ft vanity would actually be a 4 ft vanity due to the jut out. I'll have to take a look outside and some measurements. Thank you for this pic! bevelyfla- we currently walk through the br to get to the closet, it's all good here. As robo said of her area, it's typical for this area as well. Thanks for the other layout idea. crl-I agree with having the shower a bit further away as to not wake up the other one. rockybird- we have to tape it out to see exactly how we will be able to move in the space. I don't want it to be tight considering it is such a large area. Thanks palimpsest! Great tweaking!

I used the RH Lugarno Sconces and coordinating towel bar and robe hook in my upstairs guest bath (full renovation). I also used a RH medicine cabinet, but can't remember the name. I'm happy with the quality. I've been using the bath for five months while my master addition was being built. I bought a RH Odeon Vanity on sale, including the marble top and the sink, for my master bath. The difference in quality, compared to my custom kitchen cabinets is the operation of the drawers. The drawers in RH vanities don't have the Blum glides/soft-close like my kitchen drawers. I also bought RH Wilshire sconces, a "train" towel rack, a towel bar, a shower shelf--all in polished nickel. Very happy with the quality. I bought during sales that also included a 20% friends and family.

We will be using a different counter top. This is one that we both like. It's white ceramic with an integral bowl. It's available in two thicknesses - 3/4" and 1 1/4".

Both of the vanities are from Fairmont Designs. We've seen them at several plumbing supply showrooms. I have also found several sources on line, including Amazon!

As much as like #1, it does read contemporary to me, too.
