This explains why Bulgarian Rose Oil, Turkish Rose Oil and Damask rose oils smell distinctly different because they use different varieties under different climate conditions. In very dry climates these evaporate very quickly. This is why the strongest smell is in the morning before the roses fully open to the sun. If it rains hard the oils can be washed out or weighed down by the water droplets and less likely to be in the air where you can smell them. Similarly, it is not unusual for the first few flowers in spring to have less fragrance for me. Also, different noses are sensitive to different scents and the combination of chemicals in the oils produced by different roses are different. Some lemony and some fruity. I can hold a bottle of Jo Malone Lime Blossom perfume to my gf mother's nose and she smells nothing at all, but I think it smells so nice. Also, I have had roses that took a few years to become fragrant (PAOK). I think often time gardeners are not patient enough to wait through the Sleep, Creep, and Leap of a rose growth cycle for a new plant to get really established. During this time the fragrance is more likely to come and go. During this time I think the color and bloom form can be inconsistent too. In other words they produced more oils more consistently as they became more vigorous. I just planted a climbing Peace rose and have been warned by many that this rose takes 4 years to really flower. 4 YEARS! But I am willing to wait. Here in Texas the humidity on hot days carries more fragrance then if we were in a high dry dessert area at the same temperature. Hybrid teas love our climate, which makes them easier to grow here and many are intensely fragrant. Interestingly if you put some cut roses in a warm water and cover them under glass (like in an apothecary vase) for about 30 minutes the fragrance will really intensify. The oils evaporate in the warm water, condense on the glass and then collect on the water surface. Because the water provides a larger surface area you can smell the collected oils better. If you do this you can sometimes even smell roses that you thought were completely scentless. I learned this from another poster mariannese. It is easy to do and you can buy these jars at Michael's or World Market or Target. In short I think there are a bunch of factors. I smelled Intrigue in many stores and greenhouses and got little sent, but then took a gamble on 5$ plant at Walmart base on online comments on the garden forum and, OMG, it is amazing. I have learned a lot about fragrance and fragrant roses from roseseek as well....See MoreWhat is your favorite, not too strong, perfume/fragrance?
Comments (41)I sort of envy people who find a scent that works for them and becomes their "signature" scent. I rarely wear any perfume, only because I don't think of it, but a good friend just gave me Jo Malone's grapefruit perfume for my birthday. I love it! I've been wearing it every day. I also have Chanel Allure, and Sarah Jessica Parker's first perfume (I think she may have come out with another one after the one I have, not sure). I also have a good "everyday" light spray called Fresh Cotton? or something like that, from Bath & Body Works. I like it in the summer when you just want a spray of something light....See MoreLadies, how do you wear your cologne/perfume?
Comments (51)Interesting Oakley that Wood Sage and Sea Salt had such a bad beginning for you. But glad it was pleasant in the end. I've had other things like that but can't remember what they were right now. And sometimes I've had the opposite too of something I thought I liked originally then after a bit it was terrible. Thank goodness for samples!!! For you 'bad dog smell', if they are rugs, I'd set them outside in the sun and fresh air a few hours and that always did it for my Mom when we had a dog. Of course if the rug is large, that's no easy task! I had great luck with bad smells from a healthcare worker that we had for my Dad not too long ago. Talk about perfume overload!! She used essential oils, smoked cigarettes and then tried to cover all that up with some sort of strong cleaner or laundry detergent and a strong mouthwash!! I could smell ALL the layers. Yuk!! I was gagging and could not get 10 feet from her. We had to cover the chair she sat in with a blanket so it wouldn't permeate the fabric. My Dad had lost most of his sense of smell and he smoked cigars so it did not bother him plus she was great with him so I just put up with it. But I couldn't stand it and by the 3rd evening we had gotten an Orek air purifier. It was a larger newer model that I had used before but worked fantastic. I could now be in the same room with her. And by the next day, it was the freshest smelling room in the house. And she was no longer ruining the furniture. Maybe this could work for you? No I don't work for Orek or anything, just reporting what worked well for us and saved us from having to fire an otherwise great worker. The new bigger one we used is called Orek DualMax Air Purifier and the smaller size we had before was called the XL Professional Air Purifier. I've since even used the big one to get cigarette smoke and mothball smells out of a few leather purses and after a few days they smelled like leather again. In fact, I'm doing this same thing as a favor for a few friends of mine. Hope you can find something that can help you....See MoreWhat are your most fragrant roses today? 2020
Comments (154)Carol: The peachy rose in my bouquet is Summer Samba floribunda (fruity scent). Stehapnie: My own-root Golden Celebration smells like cupcakes from the oven, it makes my house smells like a cross between a florist shop and a bakery (YUM). One bloom perfumes the entire kitchen. Crimson glory (hybrid tea) smells good on the bush, but the scent is gone after 1 day in the vase. I prefer Firefighter's scent that lasts until petals drop. For quality of scent, I place Gruss an Teplitz's spicy scent over Firefighter. Gruss is drought tolerant & likes heat. It blooms best when the weather is over 90 F. Gruss grows wild in Pakistan's hot & dry and alkaline sandy soil (learned that from Khalid, who used to post in Organic rose forum). Gruss an Teplitz is the father of Dr.Huey-rootstock, but the blooms are much prettier with amazing spicy scent (almost as good as Barcelona): Below is Gruss an Teplitz, a 10th-year own root in my zone 5 garden:...See MoreUser
