Tell me about split system A/C for small condo

I've had this recommended for our 850 sq ft condo (8-foot ceilings) on Maui. It's a LR and one BR connected by a hallway. Two bathrooms. Currently very adequately cooled by two through-the-wall units: LR is 12,000 BTU; BR is 8,000 BTU. These units only last a few years until they rust out, and it's $200 installation to replace every time.

Another owner here brags about his 10-year-old Mitsubishi split system. I don't know how these work. There is no ductwork here. Would this require two outside compressors? (Wouldn't they rust out same as my existing units?)

I see Mitsubishi systems wholesale at about $3K, but isn't there a lot of labor to install? We'd have to patch existing A/C holes and mount interior units near the ceilings, but what else?
