Jade Plant losing new leaves
Comments (6)Linda, Aside from Josh's questions... When did you get the Jade? How much light was it getting before you brought it home and now? I'm certain you read Jades are succulents, so soil needs to dry between waterings.. This is true. However, since your Jade is potted in a Bonsai pot, soil dries much quicker. Therefore, your soil 'may' need more water. Testing soil in a bonsai container is simple enough to determine whether the soil needs a drink or not. Of course, it depends on size of pot, plant/roots, room temp, etc. A picture would help..and size of pot, too. Toni...See MoreJade tree is losing a lot of leaves!
Comments (12)Salt levels = a total of everything dissolved in the water that is in the soil. That includes the dissolved solids in your tapwater (if you water with tap water) and the fertilizer salts the plant doesn't use. These dissolved solids accumulate in the soil and make it difficult for the plant to take up water and can cause the plant to shed leaves or die - but that's probably not happening to your plant. There is an ideal ratio between the nutrients that should be in your soil at all times. When that ratio gets skewed (out of whack), it's bad for the plant. Some people will argue that fish tank water is a good thing, but they won't be able to tell you why they think it's better than a sound fertilizer supplementation plan. It is better than no fertilizer, but has no potential to help if you have a solid plan in place. Because you're a beginner, it might not do me any good to try to explain why, but I will if you want to take a stab at it. The soil + sand is probably not a good choice because it's going to hold a LOT of excess water, and jades don't like soggy soils. You can work around that issue by being very careful about how/when you water, but it's far from ideal. Al...See MoreBaby Jade losing leaves
Comments (7)Karla MG cactus & succulent mix is not as good as it sounds. If I was to use it, I would sift it (use a kitchen sieve) and only particles that stay in the sieve would be used. They still need to be mixed with some inorganic materials: if you can't get anything else (grit, pumice, turface...) buy at least a bag of perlite (easy to buy & inexpensive). Sift some using same sieve (to get rid of dust & very small particles; you may want to use a mask if sifting lots of it). Mix perlite with sifted C&S soil in 50/50% ratio. Josh grows lots of succulents very well, see what he posted. BTW, where are you located? It is good to post zone/gen.location next to your name (see above), it helps to answer questions. Portulacaria definitely benefits from watering little more often than some other succulents. It will grow well in cooler temps (how 'cold' is it where is it kept?). But 'crappy' soil stays wet for too long, and that's no good in any temps. Rina...See MoreJade Plant losing leaves and branches
Comments (8)I agree with Mike above, and other posters. It is kind of late to repot, but you already bare-rooted so just finish it best possible way and let plant to recuperate (jades are quite sturdy plants and it really shouldn't 'suffer'). It would help if you indicate your general location or at least a growing zone. I would divide it (at least that one smaller trunk...), but leave that for next year or year after. If you can get some grit and add that to potting mix, it would be better draining IMO. Keep soil to max 30%, and balance equally split between perlite & grit. Plant has lots of etiolated growth, so you should figure out better lighting - maybe some supplemental lights. I would shorten up/prune some of the etiolated growth, and you can use prunings to start new plants. Since you sprayed off the soil - may I ask why not all of it?...See MoreMentha (East TN, Zone 6B-7A)
