And there's a difference between stress colors and the leaves shriveling from lack of water, which isn't a sign of good health at all. And some plants will look nice and colorful in summer sun, while I find a few will look like crud, like some summer-dormant Aeoniums. With your plant and with most, it's a matter of personal preference, and stress colors are often not unlike what will happen to plants in nature anyway. Aloes deal with it well and turn brilliant colors in their natural landscape. I'd not put the plant in severe direct sun, at the risk of burning--that's just me--and I'd be careful to acclimate it to greater levels of light and not abruptly move it from low light levels to sun, which could shock the plant and cause burning. I know Dave's Garden has a little article called "Stressed Out Succulents - Good or Bad?" about stress colors, and you could Google that for a quick read....See MoreHaworthia cymbiformis losing color
Comments (3)Tyia, I have a feeling your cymbiformas may be headed to plant heaven. First thing I'd do is pull it from the pot (you're right - a peat based mix is the worst for Haworthias!) I'm going to bet that you aren't going to find much of a root system. Haworthias are notorious for losing their roots. If a lot of the roots are squishy/spongey, that's what's happened. Pull all those off gently watching as you get closer to the plant for white, hard new roots. Once you get all the dead stuff off, I would just set it aside in a shady spot for a couple days. Then I'd repot it in a new mix. Cymbiformis is a Haworthia that has a relatively shallow root system, so if it was in a standard 4" pot, it was probably swimming in too much (bad) soil. If you can, put it in a shallow bonsai pot, not too big, in a very course mix. And yes, a photo always helps. It was a good idea to take a pup off of it just in case. LOL If you have Paypal, it might be easier.... I will send you pictures privately with an email so if it/they aren't what you want, I will return to BBS... no problem. Comments (26)Katherine, very nice finds, for sure. Love that vibrant green! hablu, that does look just like my fatty! In looking back at the 1st photos I posted I see now how much less brown coloring mine has from when I purchased it. I've had it under the umbrella getting filtered sunlight. I see yours has some of the same coloring that mine used to. Is it stress coloring from getting more light or direct sun? If so, the change in mine happened quickly, in about a week's time.
