59" Space for bathroom vanity.

My husband and I have one final major project to do in our home...our horrific 1985 pressboard and Formica riddled bathroom.

We really try to work on a modest budget while still making things look nice. We are pretty good DIYers. We renovated our whole entire kitchen on our own so we are capable.

Here is our dilemma, where our vanity sits is 59" length which really makes finding a proper vanity hard. We don't really want the furniture look and would prefer to use kitchen depth since do have the space for that.

Does anyone have any ideas for how we can maximize space and storage?

I thought of going with kitchen depth too but the problem is the sink base. You will have to buy separate pieces, as kitchen bases only come in a standard length. Check Kraftmaid's website. Look under their "cabinet specifications" section (you might have to hunt for it - maybe under the 'help" section?) You will see the dealer catalog. You can get three different sections to equal 57" and that would leave enough for countertop overhang. We needed a 57" vanity. No problem with Kraftmaid - they had a once piece in that size. We ended up not getting the kitchen depth because the faucet is too far back in the cabinet.

Can you have open space? Does the cabinet *have* to touch something on both sides? Some furniture-look vanities don't look good w/ fillers (cabinet-look ones do), but those usually look best if theyv'e got a little air around them. Sometimes I think it's the space between furniture and walls (and between furniture & floors) that makes a room look spacious. Even if it's 2 inches each side. And 60" is common--is there no way your GC can help you shave a little bit of dimension off the walls (or something else) to get you an extra 3/4 inch? Maybe that won't work, since 60" vanities are sometimes bigger in the front, w/ the fancy feet, etc. But if you can--can he shave a little off the studs, use a thinner drywall, shift something else over? Another issue - sconces don't give off great light for makeup application. I would suggest a small recessed light over each sink as well or some additional lighting for makeup (a wall mounted lighted makeup mirror, etc.)

I think it will look fine either way....if it is lower, you have a dedicated/defined area as your makeup vanity. If it is the same height, that space may or may not be used as a vanity and will just become part of the overall sink area. Only you can decide which will work better for you. A counter-height stool COULD look a little strange in your bathroom and is not the norm, but if you like it that's all that matters.

There are premade vanities on the market in 84 inches. You could use an72 inch vanity and add a tilt-out cabinet for a laundry hamper. Just extend the counter the full length.

Any suggestions? Cut into drywall to make 60" fit? Modify cabs?

I checked for you. Go to Kraftmaid.com, click "Support" then scroll down and on the right side you will see "cabinet specifications". (I am in no way associated with Kraftmaid - it just worked or us). Also, Kraftmaid has the deepest drawers in the industry. I am disappointed in my kitchen drawer depth from another manufacturer. Have fun, there is soooooo much to look at!

Our MB vanity area is 59" also. It has been so frustrating! I decided to go with ikea cabinets and Scherr's fronts. We will have 2 banks of 15" drawers and a 24" sink base. Filler on the sides. We are keeping them kitchen depth. You cannot use ikea for double sinks with their standard sizes and 59". You could also have the cabinet joint make you a vanity. Their vanity is a single unit. They make rta cabinets so that option was also affordable. I wasn't as happy with the drawer sizes with them so that is why I chose ikea.

And if you don't like Kraftmaid or want to get another price, google "Cabinetmaker" for your town and a few near you. I had fully custom cabinets made for my kitchen cheaper than I could get semi-custom at the big box stores back in 2003. You may find that a local cabinetmaker will make the vanity you need at a reasonable price - and do it exactly the way you want it, the height you like, too.
