Build in double vanity or two single vanities in J&J bathroom?

We have about a 59.5" wide by 24" deep area for a vanity in the Jack and Jill bathroom. It is separate from the toilet/tub. We are building a transitional-craftsman-coastal home. We have young kids right now, but I know they will eventually be teenagers, so I want something that works with both ages. Would you recommend a double sink single "built-in" vanity or two single sink vanities? Pros and cons? Thank you!

Single for more counter space, easier cleaning of floor, no drips down sides.

If you can still change the floor plan, I would strongly suggest not doing a J&J bathroom. In theory they sound great, but in real life they usually aren't.

Different strokes ;-) I don't use my linen tower for linen (we have a nice closet) in the other bath but I love if for all the items I buy in bulk like Kleenex, bar soap, deodorant, hair styling products, basic first aid, (it's outside the steam area) wipes, girl stuff like perfume I rarely use etc. I also keep my travel toiletries, shower head, hair dryer, etc. in there ready to grab for when I decide to go on one of my spontaneous road trips. It's only 18" wide and 15" deep pulled out to match the vanity depth of 21".

I prefer two mirrors as well because I think it gives a more balanced look and it provides defined spaces, his and hers in our case. Your statement about wanting to make it so that 3 people can use it is what has me curious though, is this a what if type scenario or is a 3rd person actually going to be in there all the time? The reason I ask is because DH and I used to make choices based on the what if's a lot. We'd spend the money or compromise on what we really wanted only to never have those "what if's" materialize. We bought a crew cab truck so if we needed to we could tote people but never once did anyone sit back there. We turned a room (that could have been my craft room) in to a guest room and in 10 years it's only been used a handful of times and an air mattress would have worked just as well. So if you want the big mirror because it will actually be used in the context you're planning for, great...then there's a need and that would be the more functional choice for your situation, but if you're just thinking well maybe 3 people might need it, then don't focus on that and do what is more practical for your every day living. KWIM? (And Ida is right, about the two lights)

We have two vanities (a 36" single-sink and an 80" double-sink) in our home that are kind of old and worn. I was initially thinking of replacing them both altogether, but then I realized it would be too much work with plumbing update, tile floor moldings, etc. What do you guys think about refacing the vanities? Is it common? I am thinking of refacing the vanities and changing the vanity tops.

This is the first time I've posted on Houzz and I am suitably impressed with the thoughtfulness of the responses. The walk-in shower is really a top priority as my most frequent guests are my parents who are both 80...in good shape but I prefer them not to have to step over into the tub/shower combination. I am favoring the tub also for resale, but realistically resale is so far down the road that it will probably be ready for an upgrade by then and there is a tub in the master....so I guess now i'm down to tub and shower with single sink vanity and linen closet or shower and no tub with enormous linen storage and large vanity...……..I think i'll draw it up both ways and see how it looks and feels....thanks so much for all the feedback and the humor....Toby thank goodness I didn't just take a sip of my coffee or it would have been all over my screen!!

I want to clarify what I meant by single...I mean one long counter with 2 sinks...not two single vanities.

If your kids can stagger their bathroom time by a few minutes, they could have a single sink with plenty of elbow room, drawer storage, and counter space, even side sconces for better lighting for applying make-up and shaving. Our 60" double sink vanity is going in our remodel.

Thank you everyone. We are very happy with our choice of a J&J bathroom. I know you either love them or hate them, but everything is framed in and we don't regret our decision for a minute. We have plenty of bathrooms in our house and I prefer to not have guests using the kid's bathroom. I grew up with a J&J bathroom and LOVED it.

My kids grew up in a house with one vanity with two sinks. Until they needed privacy, they used the bathroom concurrently both mornings and nighttime, so I'm definitely in the camp of two sinks. I'd do one vanity and two sinks in the space you have (two single sinks would be too small to have "space" for a hair dryer for example.

I vote for a single sink too. Kids will value drawer space and counter space more highly than a second sink. If they're typical, they'll never use the sink at the same time anyway.

I also vote for keeping the jack and jill.

I have and Jack and Jill and love it. We have one long vanity and one sink. My kids were teenagers when we built our house. One boy, one girl. They were NEVER in the bathroom at the same time. A single sink in a long vanity was never a problem. I think they enjoyed the counter and drawer space more than a sink they only used for a few minutes. You won't regret your J&J. Now our guests love it! Very private for them.
