I would have though that the lights should face up, too, but when I searched for lights that could go up or down, the light in pic#2 came up. I turned the light bar in the powder room to face up a few years ago and turned it back around immediately. It lit up the ceiling, not the sink area. Maybe we'd hang the pillar type, facing up but lower to avoid that problem? I don't know. Time to go chat up the folks at my local lighting showroom.

We could always go back to the bar over the sink but I'd like the lighting to be more flattering. It's hard enough getting used the old lady who looks back at me each morning, lol.

My KD is recommending that the mirrors be 22" wide (inc 5" for frame, 2
1/2" each side) since our vanity base is 24" wide. We also need to make
sure we have enough room between the mirrors to have 2 lights next to
each other, one for DH's mirror, one for my mirror. We each currently
have 120 watts over our heads and I don't want to go dimmer than that so
it would really be best for us to have a light on each side of our
mirrors.

Right now, we have mirror end to end for our 87" long vanity. It's all mirror. I'll be glad to see that much mirror go away.

When I suggested three sconces, I meant that the center sconce serves both mirrors. With 24" mirrors, I think you have 15" to center a sconce. But the one on the left will be close to the wall if you have 12" there--5" between mirror and sconce, 5" width for sconce, leaving you 2" from the wall.

A nice look for a long vanity is a double sconce in the middle, and now that I think of it, someone did post a double tube sconce here recently. I think it was on Shades of Light.

Restoration Hardware has the Edison milk glass sconce in single and the matching double in polished nickel, $129, and bronze, $149.

The plan is to put the sconces 5" OC from the mirror so I'll have more room between sconces and more room between sconce and wall than you figured.

Didn't think about doing a double sconce in the middle, though. Hmm, that's worth thinking about more. Thanks!

So, the math....

The sink bases are 25 3/4 and the center cab is 19 1/2. The plan is for the mirrors to be 22" (or maybe a bit more) so we will have 25" between mirrors. That's going to make it hard to have the spacing between mirror and light be the same between the mirrors as it will be at each end.

I think I'd prefer 4 sconces, not the 3. I'm concerned about whether the center sconces will provide enough light when I'm at the mirror. Looks like I need to go talk to a light designer at a local showroom to see whether my concern is valid.

Oh, so your end drawers are only 8"?

Here's a vanity where the drawers are the same width, allowing for three lights to be spaced evenly. With 87" and 24" sink bases, you could do three 13" drawers instead of 8". While a 19" center drawer is nice, 8" gives you basically two stacks of toothpaste drawers, eight drawers in all.

The end drawer base is 10 1/2". Thanks for the suggestion but we do not want to redesign the bath vanity. The drawer widths we spec'd work very well for our needs.

We currently have 120 watts in the bar fixture above each sink and we want to keep the wattage per sink area the same. Most fixtures limit wattage to 60 so that would be difficult to do with only 3 fixtures. We could increase the amount of light by switching to LED but I have to watch LED lumens, too. I can't handle overly bright LED light; gives me a headache. It's all a juggling act but I think sticking with my original plan of 2 fixtures per mirror is the right way to go.

We are doing 4 sconces; I checked with the lighting pros. The light spread wouldn't be the same if we did a center sconce, even a double center sconce. I want even light spread so that option is out.

I'm giving up my search for tube sconces. They aren't coming in the finish I want and/or are way beyond our budget. That's okay, though, because I really like what we've decided on instead.

Deadlines are great motivators. =)

But now we wait. It's a 3-5 week lead time for the Kohler shower pan and a 6-8 week lead time for the liner tiles for the backsplash. Oh, well, can't be helped.

Guess what, mayflowers? Turns out that doing a double sconce in the middle may be a good option after all!

I've been working away on my lighting placement plan for my GC and discovered that if I center the sconce on the left instead of the OC placement my KD suggested, the distance between mirror and glass shades for the single and the double sconces is nearly the same.

I've sent off an email to my KD to make sure that placing the lights slightly farther away from the mirror than she suggested won't be an issue, light-wise. If not, then it's just a matter of aesthetics.

Here are my two options:

Material cost for 4 lights is cheaper than for 2 singles and 1 double but the labor to install 4 lights will be more than for 2 singles and a double.

I'm not sure which plan I like better. I change my mind every minute, thanks to a bad case of decision overload.

I built sconces out of cereal box cardboard and taped them to my wall to check size and projection. I like as much information as possible!

I plan to use blue tape to mark things out but the cereal box mock-up is a great idea, thanks, mayflowers!

Thought I'd let you know that the single sconce, double sconce, single sconce got the thumbs up from my KD and my ID. Yay! Thanks for suggesting that, mayflowers, not sure I would have considered it otherwise.

Just occurred to me that I should run this past DH, too, but knowing him, he'll say he's fine with either plan. =)

We did our guest bath three years ago and almost did the master last year, so I've probably looked at thousands of bath photos in that time. I really like the double sconce when there's a wide counter between sinks.

I do, too, mayflowers. I'm glad it will work out for our bathroom.

Here's my final lighting plan. (Final is a bit more loose than it sounds. Height may be tweaked once I've received the sconces.)

Sheesh but there's a lot to learn about sconce placement! As it happens, I am right in the ballpark for spacing between sconces: 36" - 40". I didn't learn that until after I had finished placing them side by side and was working on height (my KD helped me with that).

It is cheaper to buy the two singles and double, around $50, plus one less electrical box. Is 60 watts enough? I know enduring has recommended 100 watts for sconces.

It looks like you're getting the larger mirror, which is good imo. The wall looks well-balanced now.

I got a pair of single sconces for $119. The double sconce is $151. Both were on sale (quite a bit off, in fact). With free shipping! And a credit to use up. Woo hoo!

Our current light bar is 3 lights with 40W bulbs in each with one over each sink. I've never felt it wasn't bright enough so I would think that 2 lights with 60W bulbs in each would be good. I can't imagine nearly doubling the light output by using 100W, or the equivalent, in each. The sconces aren't rated for higher than 60W but I could always bump up the lumens by switching to LEDs. Did we talk about this already? I'm having a serious case of deja vu.

I did see a discussion about LEDs in one of your posts. I have three 75 watt bulbs in an overhead light but no other lighting or window in the room. I have never used a side sconce. When we get around to changing our 60" double vanity to a single, I'd like to mount the sconces on the mirror to get some light bounce.

The lights cost less than they were when I bought them but the free shipping offer has ended so the net cost is likely about the same.

3 lights with 75 watts - right around the 240 watts that I have. We have a (very dim) can light over the tub but other than that, the sconce lighting is all we have in the vanity/tub area. I think we'll start out with 60 watt bulbs in the fixtures and see whether we need to increase the lumens. Our paint color, counter and flooring will be slightly darker than it currently is but that shouldn't make a big difference. We are going from a nearly full wall of mirror to narrower, single mirrors and that will likely make a difference, too, but I will be very glad to get rid of that huge mirror.

Yeah, I discovered that detail shortly after I posted. Dang! The lights were already on sale when I purchased them but not on clearance so I don't think I would have been able to use the extra20 discount anyway.
