Another related note, we have a horizontal spout in the shower tub and it dribbles water for a day or two and on the third day it stopped leaking. We had thought the problem went away since the bathroom is still being worked on we haven't been using that tub. However, we tested it again and turned on the water and turned it off at 8pm last night and this morning at 8am, we saw and heard it dribbling water from the spout again. In this case, it seems like residual water because there were days in between (when we didn't touch or use the tub faucet) where it was not dripping at all. It just seems abnormal, why on earth would there be residual water for a couple days then it dries up? Then the tub will always be wet and stained.

It'll be interesting to see if the sink faucets are acting the same way, if it is, why would residual water sitting in the faucet/pipes for days to dry? We live in Southern California so things should dry up pretty fast. Our old bathroom fixtures never had this issue. All new plumbing was put in during the renovation.

The shower diverter and spout are from Newport Brass and the sink faucets are Toto.

The other issue you describe with water trickling out from the shower after a day or two is not uncommon and not an indication that something is wrong with your plumbing. Residual water can sit in a length of plumbing for a long time without "drying out." I won't try to give you a boring explanation about fluid mechanics, but I'll simply say that some water can sit in the faucet or in a run of piping to a shower for quite some time, and, due to a vibration or a slight bit of thermal expansion, one drop will escape out the spout and sort of pull more water with it. As long as you don't have a dripping leak that never stops, this is not something to worry about or try to fix.

It's been exactly 48 hours since the faucet has been turned off and left untouched. I tested 3 times at 8 hours and the glass cup had around 1/2 teaspoon of water for all 3 times, doesn't seem to be more nor less. It's behaving the same with both faucets. Here's a photo of the water in the spout, there's always a tiny puddle of water in the sink and a drip forming at the tip of the spout. Notice the aerator had been taken out for this test so nothing was obstructing the water from coming out. When can residual water be ruled out?

The experiment proves that my hypothesis about residual water doesn't explain this problem. If you are getting equal amounts of water in the glass during a second or third 8-hour period, like you describe, then there is some kind of very slow leak. Such leaks are due typically to some problem with one or both cartridges.

Cartridges can leak in one of two ways: 1) the assembly screws in place, and there is sometimes a slight imperfection in the seal or it isn't torqued down properly, or 2) there is some problem with the ceramic mechanism itself. If, I understand correctly, you had this problem, and replaced all the cartridges with new ones, though...correct? So the fact that this is going on with both faucets is pretty odd. The only thing I can suggest is that you pull the cartridges and inspect them to make sure they all have undamaged O-rings where they seat into the faucet body. You could also call Toto Customer Service and see if they have any suggestions.

This is annoying and baffling, but at least the amount of water being lost is so trivial that it doesn't have an impact on your water bill!

Thanks kudzu9 for the troubleshooting! I had hoped it was residual water. I've contacted Toto and they are sending me new sets of cartridges again. They said the high water pressure "could've" blown out the cartridges. Both faucets are having exactly the same issue on both hot and cold sides, so the chances of 4 cartridges being blown out all at once...I'm kind of doubtful of that. I will keep you posted after the new cartridges are installed. The next thing I might do is get a whole new set of faucets from another manufacturer.

Toto is a quality manufacturer, but that business about high water pressure blowing out the cartridges is baloney. When you remove the existing cartridges, inspect all the "seats" inside the faucet bodies before installing the new cartridges. The seat is the surface that the cartridge bears against when it is screwed into place. You should be able to see a smooth circular brass surface with clean threads, and there shouldn't be any deep scratches or grit or corrosion visible. There should also be an O-ring seal on each cartridge where it seats into the faucet body. I recently replaced some old cartridges and found that one of the seals was missing and that the plumber had apparently torqued the cartridge down super-tight to make it not leak. When installing cartridges, it's important to get them down tight, but not too tight. A torque wrench is recommended if you don't have a feel for this.

I think that the shape of the faucet is causing a vacuum - and it holds the water in the faucet body. Try this after turning the water off: insert a pipe cleaner, straw, etc, into the faucet - to break the vacuum - and get the trapped water out of the faucet. After that see if any more water leaks out.

geoffrey- It's not clear to me how a vacuum would occur. Your idea sounds similar to what I was thinking about water retention, but I think the fact that water seems to continuously come out disproves that.

The spout is an upside down 'U'. Did you do what I said and try to chase the water out of the spout as soon as you turn it off? Dry the sink - and see if any more comes out.

Yes, the possibility of residual water is what I suggested early on...which I no longer think is the whole explanation. I'm not trying to pick a fight; I just didn't understand what you were saying. I understand the spout is a U-shape, but the diameter of it is large enough to preclude a vacuum forming. Now that you have explained further, I can only say that large diameter tubes have different fluid mechanics characteristics compared to small diameter ones, so I don't think this explains the problem. However, I'm not discouraging the OP from trying your suggestion...

So the new cartridges are in and same thing, still dripping. I had a professional plumber come in to check the installation and plumbing and he said all looked good. He said of the 20 years he's been in plumbing he's never encountered this issue before. He suggested to get new replacement faucets so I'm working with Toto on that. Will provide an update after the new faucets are in.

Hello, my faucet is having a leaking issue, as well. However, it's a different type of faucet from what I am seeing here. Water actually trickles out the top where the lever is that you pull up to turn the faucet on. It also drips out of the spout. And the kicker is that when I open the cabinet underneath, there are big drops in three places coming down from the inside top of the cabinet where the bowl/sink sits. The stranger part is that I do not see any water on top of the cabinet underneath the bowl/sink. In other words, the inside is dripping as if there is a puddle in top of the cabinet which is causing it to leak inside. So there are 3

separate leaks 2 from the faucet itself and one from the cabinet top under the bowl. So I am basically sitting here listening to drips inside the cabinet and if left undetected a large puddle will form in the bottom of the cabinet. I hope all this makes sense, so I can get some help with this confusing issue. Thank you so much.

1. You need to likely replace the cartridge in the faucet.

2. If you have undersink shutoff valves, you can close these to stop the dripping until you get the faucet repaired.

Thank you so much for your response. I had no idea my faucet has a cartridge. I took a picture of it. Were you able to view it? I do not see it here. Also, where would I purchase a cartridge, does somewhere like Home Depot or Lowe's have it?

Can't see a picture, but it won't make a difference in my answer. Old faucets used to have gaskets and packing that needed to be periodically replaced. New ones use ceramic cartridges that last a long time. A pull-on handle will have some kind of cartridge. Unfortunately, cartridges are specific to the faucet, so it's important to know the brand and model so you can find the right one. There are plenty of cartridge replacement videos on YouTube, but you may need a plumber or handy friend if this is beyond your skill level.

That has a cartridge, but it's from a brand I've never heard of. You are probably going to have to contact their customer service to see if you can get the part and installation instructions from them.
