never thought i'de say 'stop raining' but...
Comments (6)The winds were so bad in South Carolina and Georgia that we could hardly keep the Jeep in the road on the way home and when we got into the metro part of Atlanta, no power and no way to get gas as you have to have power to pump gas. Finally, we made it near Auburn where there was power and got gas (whew)before running out. Good thing we had gassed completely up in South Carolina. I have had weather this bad and the good part of it is (and this time of year as well) that you have some water. Most of my roses got more diseased from insects when we had drought. That was when I found the RRD and the spider mites, which thrive on hot, dry. You will have another flush of roses, you might not be able to get that rain again. I don't want the death and destruction that was part of what some areas got Saturday and Sunday, but I sure could use some rain, drought here for about 3 years now....See MoreI found my perfect red, somewhere I never thought I would...
Comments (21)modar - I painted my dining room in my last home dark burgundy! Deep, dark red, not purple-ish. My DH thought I was nuts, be he did his best to keep his mouth shut, and he ended up loving it! It was a small room, and I think the color warmed up the space and made it feel cozy and rich at the same time. We got lots of compliments. I chose Georgian Brick for this house because I was trying to coordinate with my brick fireplace and brick floors in another room. I love the color! Good luck with your choices, bloomin......See MoreEver feel like the reno will NEVER get done?
Comments (36)Oh my gosh, you guys are cracking me up! I never heard of the "while we're at it" syndrome, but yes, we have caught it too! Though that's not really the hold up here. And we've begun quietly keeping a "while we're at it list" until the kitchen is done - we don't want the contractor to get distracted!!! I'm not angry. Even though some personal issues caused the contractor to be away, that is not entirely unexpected when it's 2 guys doing all the work. They do beautiful work. and even though they are quite behind and know it, they are not taking any short cuts to get caught up. I appreciate that integrity and artistic sentiment. The penalty clause we included is quite stiff, but it's more of a scare tactic to keep them on track (how's that working out?!). We certainly won't enforce it at the earliest possible date, if at all. We like the guy, we love his work, and honestly, it's in a part of the house that doesn't interfere with our day to day lives, and I have a fully functioning kitchen in the meantime. Clearly, not much to complain about. Just tired. And impatient. Glad to see I'm not alone here. We can cheer each other on. Since all of my major decisions are made, I haven't been on here as much and don't have a lot of time just to peruse (though I do when I can). I'm afraid if and when it's time for the reveal, nobody will care! :D...See MoreNever, ever again will I plant a buddleia
Comments (67)I've tried two different BB's so far: first was Miss Molly and it smelled so great, but it did not survive it's third winter. I couldn't find that same one so I replaced it with a Miss Ruby. This is it's third year and it has a little bit of new growth visible (earliest ever that I have seen). Despite how easily they seem to die here I do love these plants. So many incredibly fragrant panicles that keep coming when I deadhead them. No invasiveness issues, and butterflies definitely love them. Someone else mentioned Rhododendrons. I have 2 PJM Elites. One in my more sheltered backyard and after 6 years it is doing fine, and had a nice bloom this spring. The other one is in the windy, exposed front yard and it struggles. The leaves desiccate and the foliage is pretty sparse. This year some heavy wooden screens leaning up against my neighbour's house fell over in heavy wind and broke a few branches off the struggling rhodo. TWICE! I would be more angry if I wasn't going to rip it out anyway. Might replace it (and a nearby Summer Snowflake Viburnum that has never grown larger than the original planting size of about 20 inches high) with a small dogwood or maybe an Annabelle hydrangea. The one plant type that really gives me fits are ferns. Ostrich fern, ghost fern, and even ferns native to this area...for whatever reason they just diminish and die. I'm done with them now. The last one just got replaced with a Chionoides rhododendron....See Moreozmelodye
