Jade tree (Crassula ovata & arborescens) as bonsai ... pics
Comments (72)Hi Ben.. I live in a 3rd story apartment in London Over the past few years I have been growing some Crassula to provide partial window screening.. My original plan was to have them shaped something like African savannah trees. It has sort of worked.. Although not strictly savannah like, this one has turn out best I think.. One problem I have is the older leaves tend to fold down, which is not bad, but not so savannah like. I would prefer if they were more horizontal. Any advice on that? Great page by the way, there are many useful tips here.. Ian...See Morejade cuttings getting moldy in gritty mix
Comments (58)Hi, guys. Shannon left a link to this thread, so I came & read through it. This is a picture of the soil most often referred to as the gritty mix. You can see by the particle size that it has tremendous macro-porosity. It's made from equal parts by volume of 1/8-1/4" fir (or pine) bark, screened Turface (hi-fired clay granules), and crushed granite (grower grit - about 1/8" pieces). You can vary the water retention of this soil by keeping the bark component at 1/3 while varying the % of Turface and granite. E.g.. a mix of 3 bark 4 Turface 2 granite would hold considerably more water than 3 bark 4 granite 2 Turface You can also simply add more Turface or granite which has the effect of reducing the organic component. I've started hundreds of different cuttings, many succulents, in this soil, and never had damping off issues, so I would bet that Kashu's issues are other cultural or inherent in the plant. I suggested a sulfur dusting of the cut end and sticking the plant in dry soil for at least a week w/o water, after at least 2 weeks callusing time. Take care - just wanted to say hey. Comments (58)Good Afternoon, Ladies and Gents! Josh, thank you. Will your Jades keep color over winter? Your Skinny Fingers is extremely red. Btw, is Skinny Fingers, Hobbit or Gollum? I still get the two mixed-up. :) A few posts below, you posted a photo of your Hobbit. You wrote 'mother and daugher.' Is daugher attached to mother? If so, will they be together, or removed to form a tree-shape standard/solo trunk? You also wrote, 'another beautiful day in northern CA.' What were temps that morning? One more question. :) You said, 'Hobbit in the light of the rising sun.' Are Crassulas in an east window? No more questions...Not at the moment anyway. lol Rob... I had no choice but to leave Jades outside when temps dipped below 32F. So far so good, however, during the day, temps are between 40-50F, nights 29-34. They're predicting 60F from Tues-Fri, although like you said, weather doesn't listen to the forecast. lol. Think I'm going to place a small table on the front porch, set Jades out during the day, then bring in at night. Today, the third of Nov is the first day we've had actual sun! If you've ever seen The Wizard of Oz, picture the twister scene. Remember the sky and wind? That's what the last 5 days resembled. :) Kuroc. Patience is the key..it seems some Jades grow faster than others. Your Jades will soon be tall and wide, then you will not know where to set them come winter. Mike, thank you..Tidy? You should see the mess after a windy day/night.. Or when I'm cleaning, and plants do the domino thing. lol. Toni...See MoreA quick morning tour
Comments (94)Thank you everyone so much. As far as him taking care of the plants, well,,,,um,,,not so much. I am going to have to do it little at a time myself. But even though a couple reservoirs were bone dry, no one wilted yet. BUT,, no one died!!!! I have this neat little tray Anne loaned me that fits on my walker and that will make this task so much easier. Thanks Anne!!! And we had so much fun at the Ann Arbor Violet Show. I also bought a miniature begonia. Those little leave are no bigger than my baby fingernail (and folks, that is small!) and I certainly love "small"!!!!! I am also gearing up for the fall show. Are you getting ready Anne????? AND there may be a light at the end of a tunnel. At the show a very nice lady asked me if I was a member of either of the clubs that put the show on. I said I don't know of anyone or group to join. She gave me a handout and my oh me!!! One of the groups is pretty close for me to attend meetings!! I am gonna try eventually! Gonna broaden my horizons!!! Thank you all for the good wishes!!! Rosie...See Moreehuns27 7a PA
