Just so you know, swags are not in right now. I recommend up down shades. this way you can get all the great light without the grill peeking in. You could also shutter the bottom half of the window and put sheers up top. You seem to have confusion regarding shades. Shades and curtains perform the same task. Sheers give the world a wonderful fuzzy glow, like cybil shepard pics - all fuzzy and perfect. So if you are doing shades you don't need curtains, unless you really want the look of them to the side. Thanks for the info. I'm not concerned about what's in right now. This style is what works on my windows. I have bookcases in between two windows & the windows aren't centered between them & the walls. So, I'm trying to give them a look of being centered. My terminology may be off, however I'm pretty sure it's understandable.

The swag is too overdone. Alter the panel to use wood rings on the wood rod. Your room doesn't look formal enough for that type of window treatment (not many rooms do). You wouldn't have the privacy concern if there were two panels or one wide panel that covered the entire window when closed.

I agree with Connie also. Your window dressings are beautiful. Swags are traditional, and though not currently trendy, are a classic. Of course if your room is more transitional or contemporary they may look out of place. There are many areas in the U.S. where swags are always part of the decor.

I can see why you liked the inspiration picture. The sheer panel adds a nice layer, especially with the angle in which the drape is held. I'm not sure your drape can be angled like the one in the picture, though. It's hard to tell from the picture, how it is constructed.

I previously had a triple layer of blinds, sheers and drapes with swags and jabots, but my blinds were very plain.

Ok, i only said what i did because a million designers will come in and say it. so just warning ahead of time. i still see the curtains that are lush on the floor, i love it, I see it in nearly every site i go, but designers always lecture about it. Valances are traditional too, just heard about them again last night. I wish everyone would not worry about any of it.

Your window treatment is lovely. You could use a pleated shade....when it is open it can be hidden completely by the top of the curtain, and then when privacy is needed it can be pulled down. This is what I have in our bathrooms. Views are not blocked, and natural light comes in.

Sheers will help with sun & diffuse peekers.

Go for the sheer and drape it back the way you see it in your inspiration photo. You will get the look and the privacy you are hoping for. I would not do roman blinds with this set up.

Just remember that sheers do NOTHING for privacy at night with the lights ON. Someone outside can see everything perfectly through sheers, at night, with the lights on.

It doesn't sound like this is what you are concerned about. The sheer will hide most of what is on your porch from the people in the room...which is probably what you were after in the first place.

You have done a good job so far of recreating your inspiration. It always helps to have a goal to work toward. But, as you have learned, the inspirations we get from other photos need to be just that - inspiration, not exact duplication. Your exact situation is likely to be different that the situation in the photo. You have different goals, too. Decide what it is exactly that you want to accomplish by adding another layer. Do you want to block the view of the grill? Are you wanting privacy day/night? Are you just wanting to diffuse light or do you need more light control for television viewing? Do you want to add further softening? After you answer all these questions you will have a better idea of direction.

We all have personal styles and preferences:) and if you are like me and like exploring changes quite often you might find your self that whatever you used to like years ago might be the exact opposite these days:) Well, I went thru many styles and enjoyed them all.. This days I find my self modern/transitional, but still enjoy other styles when I walk in to a place well put together.. Styles comes and goes and come back again.. Do what makes your heart smile.. but if you are not sure where to start, don't hesitate to get a professional to your house because there are so many factors to consider when talking windows..
