All cabinets are not created equal. There are many variations of materials used in the construction. Is the question is how long do you want the cabinets to last? What is the style, if you are looking for an inset cabinet door your options reduce greatly for stock cabinetry. If you are thinking of semi custom, do the finishes for the semi custom order match perfectly with stock cabinets in the order? Is there edge banding on Plywood that may come off the shelving or the face of the cabinet if it has a euro box. With stock cabinets will there be gaps that need to be filled with filler strips, detracting from the overall symmetry of your kitchen. All wood construction usually has plywood for the cabinet box and a face frame of hardwood, no particle board. Custom cabinets, with a factory finish completed at the same time for a uniform look, with no edge banding, or unnecessary filler strips, may be worth an additional expense. Those who have had a kitchen remodel done know that it is not something that you want to do often. For a little more money to have a functional, beautiful, well designed kitchen to wake to in the morning is money well spent.

Don't know where you are, but I was referred to Marcon Kitchen (Dundas & Prince Edward area) by a woman that used them for her modern kitchen design. I got a quote from them but ultimately went elsewhere because they weren't custom enough for my design (I have an old house with really odd/difficult challenges).. If it wasn't for that, they probably would have my business. Talk to Amanda - she's really creative!

My daughter did a limited remodel of her 10'X10' kitchen in SF: new flooring and new cabinets/sink only. No structural changes, no new appliances, no island. Cost about $35K five years ago. Other bids at the time were up to $65K. With subsequent increases for labor and materials, plus the high demand for competent contractors due to the pandemic, I'd guess she would easily be paying twice that now. For your more complex remodel my WAG is in the $100-150K range for the kitchen alone. But you will only know if you can get some estimates. It's a volatile time and you shouldn't be making decisions based on what strangers on this forum are guesstimating.

If there are truly no changes to plumbing and electrical--and I would be very surprised if that's really the case unless the kitchen was redone relatively recently with permits and you're only changing things aesthetically, since CA code has a lot of specific requirements for kitchens--then you can do this relatively affordably if you're willing to piece out the elements (that is, hire someone for the demo, someone else for the drywall, someone else for the tile, etc.) It will take longer than working with a GC and you'll have to manage the project, but is considerably cheaper. We did this for our kitchen in the SF East Bay many years ago and I'm happy to share names of some of the people we worked with who are still around if you PM me. We had the cabinets and counters installed by the cabinetmaker and fabricator, respectively. We hired a plumber, electrician, and drywaller directly. We did the floors and painted ourselves (though could easily have outsourced those too). We did the plans and pulled the permits, so it was on us to make sure everything was to code and that we purchased the right supplies and materials. (We did opt to pay a kitchen designer hourly to review and give feedback on our plans, in addition to many many posts on GardenWeb, to be sure we weren't missing anything, and I definitely recommend that if you do a project like this.) All of that takes time, which is a lot of what a GC is charging you for (that, and relationships that will help your project get to the finish line more quickly). We are finishing a bathroom project using a GC now, though, and there have been just as many (more?) hiccups with that project as with the kitchen. The only real distinction is that it's on the GC to fix, not on us (e.g., we just had our final inspection and had corrections to make, so I texted him the list and that was that--with the kitchen we had to call the electrician back to ask and pay for a change, etc.) Raw material costs are up right now and there are still some supply chain issues. I found it helpful for our bathroom project to slowly collect what we needed as things went on sale, so we had a garage full of pieces for many months.
