I like a mirror with a frame stained to match the cabinetry like this first picture or two separate mirrors centered above each sink each with a fixture centered above each mirror. In this second photo there are sconces but I can imagine it with lights like one linked here, a pair of them, each centered over the two mirrors. A site to shop for possible lights is lightingdirect. What Babka says. Also think about if you want the sconces over the vanity or to either side. With a 48" vanity and a 40" mirror that leaves 4" either side of the vanity. No room to have the lights over the vanity. Draw it up on graph paper. Look on houzz and evaluate the mirror, vanity, and light placements. What do you like?

Thanks, ingrid. I definitely want some kind of cabinet, but prefer recessed. There will be no other storage in this bathroom other than what is under the vanity. I don't care so much about looking "dated" -- the house was built in 1950, so of course it's all dated. I chose frameless because I didn't want to have any more colors, textures, or types of wood in this small bathroom than are already there -- there are two colors of tile on the wall, three on the floor, the new vanity will be a dark cherry, the wood trim in the room is a medium brown, all the plumbing fixtures are white, and the metal is all chrome. What prompted me to post here is I'm starting to wonder if having the mirror a few inches wider than the vanity on each side will look odd or unbalanced. The rule of thumb seems to be that the mirror or cabinet should be no wider than the sink/counter beneath it. The light fixture is going to be above the mirror, and it's three-globe, chrome and glass, about 24" wide (see link). Here is a link that might be useful: Light fixture

Given it's a powder room..frankly, I'd just leave it bare. Put a big pot with a low-light loving plant. And art above it. Of course you can use a space for storage, add something like a tower..in this case, I'd incorporate upper glass/open shelving, so it won't overwhelm the room, will give an airier feel. You could use the upper part for pretty things too, and keep supplies etc. in the lower, enclosed part. I wouldn't put a make up table, just because I don't exactly think it's going to add to functionality of the space. Your vanity will be big enough for all guests' make up needs. With plant(as an example) and art you have the beauty. With the cabinet/shelves, you have the function(and potentially, beauty too). With make up table...you've got "why?". Just my humble opinion of course.
