I like a mirror with a frame stained to match the cabinetry like this first picture or two separate mirrors centered above each sink each with a fixture centered above each mirror. In this second photo there are sconces but I can imagine it with lights like one linked here, a pair of them, each centered over the two mirrors. A site to shop for possible lights is lightingdirect. While side lighting may be more flattering, I went with the "bar" - well, not really a solid "dressing room" style, but one with crackled glass shades. In my bathroom, I just needed something with more of a "presence" to distract from the pinkness of it all.

Thanks, ingrid. I definitely want some kind of cabinet, but prefer recessed. There will be no other storage in this bathroom other than what is under the vanity. I don't care so much about looking "dated" -- the house was built in 1950, so of course it's all dated. I chose frameless because I didn't want to have any more colors, textures, or types of wood in this small bathroom than are already there -- there are two colors of tile on the wall, three on the floor, the new vanity will be a dark cherry, the wood trim in the room is a medium brown, all the plumbing fixtures are white, and the metal is all chrome. What prompted me to post here is I'm starting to wonder if having the mirror a few inches wider than the vanity on each side will look odd or unbalanced. The rule of thumb seems to be that the mirror or cabinet should be no wider than the sink/counter beneath it. The light fixture is going to be above the mirror, and it's three-globe, chrome and glass, about 24" wide (see link). Here is a link that might be useful: Light fixture

It will be too narrow I'm afraid. Unless you decide to change the light fixture for a smaller one/put sconces on the side.. Any possibility to do a mock-up? Even if you draw it quickly on a piece of paper-will be helpful. Or put a tape on that wall just to see where the edges will be. Because it might look great horizontally but might look a bit awkward too. Depends on the frame, and how your light fixture goes, etc. If it was something smaller I'd advise you to try it and return it if it doesn't work.But mirrors are heavy and, frankly, a pain..
