It's perfectly possible to reuse your old windows. You just need to reuse the old jambs that the windows are in now. Structurally there's no difference. The window opening needs to be large enough so that the old jamb will fit with a little extra space for shims to plumb the jamb. You need a carpenter that knows his trade. The only real problem you might run into is your local building code. Some locales insist on dual pane windows in any permitted work.

You come on here and blame the windows 100% and slam Marvin (could be any brand doesn't matter) yet offer no info on the age of the windows or how they are installed. You state PERFECTLY maintained but we have to accept your word on that. Does wood wick water thru end grain, yeah. Does it do it frequently yes it can. Are they ways and steps to minimize this, yes there are and in my opinion if you are having this issue repetitively and with all your windows they are not or could not be perfectly maintained. I'd like to hire my carpenter to install vinyl siding, but he's not happy about possibly working with a sub who would be a certified installer from the window company. So I'll ask him which windows he can get from his supplier., but I read online that if a certified installer doesn't install the windows, warranty issues are troublesome. Dealer blames window company, window dealer blames installer. I'd rather he do the siding, but we need to do windows as well. Meanwhile I'm getting more estimates from companies who do both siding and windows, then I'll decide. Recap, now Looking at 25 replacement doublehung vinyl windows. Big investment , especially coupled with vinyl siding installation. I wanna get it right. There's dozens of choices, and it's confusing because you have to weigh cost, energy efficiency, etc.. I've learned a lot here, thanks to you guys. The Sunrise (Vanguard) dealer only sells and windows. Another contractor, Mastic siding , only sells Ellison 1300 windows. A third company, Certainteed siding and Simonton 5500 windows, which do not seem to be highly regarded here.. A fourth (not local) Alside Siding and Mezzo Windows, again, not highly regarded here. Today is my last quote, and he's (not local) Certainteed Siding, and Polaris windows. Any thoughts?

@WoW Washington Unfortunately I'm missing one storm window. The storms are fine. just needs to be painted. I might be missing 1 set of screens that got damage. Two windows sashes have damage panes, but I have replacements in the garage. theoretically this looks easy to switch. one of the balance tubes might need to be adjusted or replace to get it to close properly. the weather stripping all around looks shot. the plastic thing is so brittle . but replacement weather stripping will take about 2 min per window to change. and its dirt cheap from marvin. (5 dollars a window) ZERO wood rot. just needs a sand + paint job on the outside. The biggest issue is that they were just caulked into place and fiber glass + caulking was put in to weather seal them. There is no sill flashing. I know this because I had to rip out the frame on oen window that was hit by a tree. (i wanted to see the rough opening before ordering) Its in the back of the house with a good over hang, so I don't see it being an issue. But foam + full flashing all around would have been my preferred method. I still have room to foam them on the sides, but still wont be 100%, but good enough. The other thing is I could just go a head and get tilt pac replacements from marvin. Cuz what i realized I would have to buy new brick mould to match the previous look and pay extra to have that installed. I attached a set of pictures, looks like a dimond in the rough? Part of me still looking at high end vinyl as a replacement for all the windows. I'm about to pull the trigger on a elevate replacement for the window that blew out. but i also just came back from Windsor dealer And im thoroughly impressed. sorry for the long post again :)
