Comments (6)'Blue Skies,' 'Silver Shadows' and 'Do-Si-Do' are all roses in shades of lavender bred by the lake Griffith Buck from Iowa State University, who focused on health and cold-hardiness. I'll put a link to a list of his hybrids -- you can click on the names to see photos and descriptions. Since you're in a different climate now I'd also try another 'Reine des Violettes.' Mine is getting ready for its first flush of the year. Love it! A rugusa rose might work for you too, like 'Hansa' which is a ruffly, fragrant hot fuschia beauty. It should be hardy in your zone. Comments (24)I had Blue Chip and am replacing it. It died from the Easter 07 freeze. Plant is compact, repeat flowers fairly quickly, flowers prone to bull-nosing and burning in our hot summer heat. Otherwise, it is a nice florist's rose for the garden. Seven Seas almost perished from the freeze. It has many ruffled petals but is not very vigorous. Shocking Blue almost perished from the freeze, but it is trying to come back. It was doing fairly well. I actually did get some small sprays. Vol de Nuit I had at my other house in Washington. Flowers were okay; I thought it was an average rose for that climate. Can't speak to a hot, humid climate for that rose. Blue Bayou I had to plants. The grafted one perished in the big freeze; the own-root plant barely hung on. I am getting another one of these also. Flowers are very silvery and have more of a pale blue cast to them when compared to some of the other lavenders which have more red to their color. I have not seen any large sprays on this variety either. That is all the comments I have on your list....See MorePainting my house lavender...but it turned out more mauve.
Comments (18)Thank you everyone for the advice. I went back to Sherwin Williams and played with 1 gallon of paint some more. Made it more blue and more purple...less mauve. Got it home and painted the section between the window where I had my "test" shutter and the front door. Put the shutter back up and realized that I didn't like it. It just looked cold and turned grey, but not a good grey. So, we stuck with the mauvish color. With the 2nd coat is was a little bit more muted. We got the shutters/windowboxes etc. back up and it looks pretty good. I think the mauve is still a bit too pink and the shutters could use to be a bit darker (but hubby said no-way to repainting those this year.) But it looks cottagey and inviting to me and that was my goal. The cream that I had before wasn't bad. I might have kept it if it had not been for the school bus yellow house directly next door. My cream just looked like a washed out version of the yellow. I would have liked to have painted my house a light, warm yellow but that obviously wouldn't have worked with bright yellow next door. I'll be posting some pictures as soon as I can get them off the digi cam. For those of you who wondered my colors are all Sherwin Williams. The shutters are Exclusive Plum and the siding is Intuitive....See MoreWhy did all the leaves fall off 1 of 2 of my newly planted rose bush
Comments (25)Yeah that sounds like a good idea Sheila...I never thought of something like that? How do those work exactly? And Seil I didn't plant in cardboard as in 'packaging the Rose came in' I mean I had moving style boxes I broke down and then I wet them down really good to put under mulch along the slope to deter weeds. I made sure to leave about 5" or so around each plant bare with a little mulch. I did however leave the soil on it when I planted, I didn't try to make bareroot? You think that could've caused it? I just want to know how to save these ...also it rained last night...not sure how hard because it ended at least an hour or two before I woke up so when I stuck finger in soil down so deep that I had no finger left! It felt pretty moist all the way down...but idk how much rain feel so idk if that could happen from the rain we just had overnight? And today has been overcast with next to no sun all day..so sun wasn't out to dry it out....See Morehuckdog1
