Anyone used Kohler cast iron shower pans?
Comments (0)Hi all- my master bathroom remodeling project is really accelerating now and we're trying to pick materials so the contractor can give us a solid cost estimate. I was planning to do an all-tile shower but the contractor recommends we go with a Kohler cast iron pan for the floor instead - it's easier to install, probably a little less espensive, and he says it's much easier to clean and maintain. It would certainly be a step up from the acrylic thing we have in there now, but I'd never seen or heard of this until he recommended it. Any experiences or thoughts? Also, for those of you with tile shower floors, how hard is it, really, to clean and maintain? Thanks! Comments (10)Enduring- thanks for responding. I had seen your shower- it turned out just beautiful. I wasn't sure if in your research you'd explored a sliding glass door or not. To answer your questions. One end of the shower is on an exterior brick wall. The other is flanked by a custom linen closet surrounded by tile with the edges grouted. It's not coming out. If I had no other choice but to do doors, I'm pretty sure I'd have to remove tile on one or both ends and add the blocking- not something I'd like to do if I can avoid it. Likely I'd just have one door and a fixed panel on the other- I'm pretty sure the toilet clearance wouldn't let me do two doors like you have. Though I see your point about having a fixed panel- I can't drill into the shower pan so that wouldn't work either. Hopefully some of the glass guys can give me their opinion about using epoxy to secure clips on the bottom. Thanks again for your help- much appreciated. Comments (9)The Kohler website has a list of approved products for cleaning it's cast iron and the Magic Eraser is not one of them. Rog 3 is approved but Rog 1 is not. Please read the cleaning advice for your drain and bath hardware too. Some companies will advise you to avoid cleaning products with bleach. Unfortunately, you may have already damaged the finish by using the eraser, It is very abrasive. I read on the Martha Stewart websiite about using ph neutral cleaning products in the home. Neu Organics (http://www.neuhomecare.com/) was mentioned by name, I purchased their sampler product box. and have been pleased with the results. I also purchased the Rog 1 and 3 cleaning kit (rog3.com/products.html) to use on my Kohler Villager tub. It has only been less than a month since my project was completed so I can not speak about long term results....See MoreKohler Cast Iron Shower Pan with textured grid floor & Main
Comments (4)We installed a Kohler Salient 30"x60" cast iron pan in Sea Salt color a few months ago. The textured grid on the floor does require periodic cleaning, but it cleans up very easily. However, we used tile over a Schluter Kerdi shower pan in a different shower, and in general I think I like the tile option better because we had more choices. The Kohler shower pans only come in a few sizes. We had space for a deeper pan (maybe up to 36"), but the 60" wide cast iron pan only comes in a 30" depth. We also decided to use Basco glass shower doors, which sit about midway across the threshold, so you lose a little more interior space there. The doors we picked are a barn door (or french door?) design so that they only attach to the walls and not to the pan. They look good, but I'm not sure if we will eventually have problems with them sagging, since they are each 30" wide. In contrast, our tile shower is only 48" wide, but we had space to make it about 33" deep. We also used a shower curtain with a rod that curves outward to provide more interior space. When you stand in that shower you have plenty of elbow room in all directions, and I like that format. It just depends on your preferences. Bruce...See Morejlhug
