Gag time, the J&P catalog
Comments (17)J&P were my original suppliers. I grow more OGRs now and mostly ownroot, so don't purchase from them as much, but I admit to having purchased some wonderful roses from them. Several things about the catalogue made me happy. They are offering Purple Tiger again. I know, I know, much groaning and complaining about that rose, but it did very well for me and there is nothing like those blooms. My x bulldozed it (actually he used a bobcat) during the divorce or I'd have it still. So now I can replace it, even though I'd rather not do grafted. For all I know, it is one of those roses that needs to be grafted. Referencing the divorce, I was able to get some of my roses, but left all of my perennials. So a couple of happy notes in the perennial area. J&P is offering the Aster "Wonder of Staffa". Its the best blue/lavendar aster ever and I hadn't been able to replace it because everyone has been offering whatever their latest is. They are also offering the siberian iris "Steve" another great bloomer I had not been able to replace for the same reason as the paragraph above. And the Malva "Blue Fountain". There is a big bare spot in my front border just waiting for this plant. About April in Paris. I grew both Pristine and New Zealand. Both I lost in the divorce. Both I plan to replace at some point because I loved them (even though I don't much like pink roses). This could be a very good rose. I'm probably going to run down the road to the local grower and buy one just to see. Its ownroot!!!!!!...See MoreJ&P roses-Know the latest?
Comments (7)Boo hoo. I went back to Lowes to see if they had finally uncovered the pallets of J&P roses, and checked the boxes for the label. Nope. Must have been wishful thinking on my part. I was really looking forward to buying Billy Graham and Disneyland Rose, but NONE of the boxes had any indication of own root or New Generation, and I could see grafts on most. Their marketing backfired. I bought many of the New Generation roses, and they did so well for me that I won't buy their grafted ones. I'm wondering if roses like Lemon Zest, which is a shrub rose, is own-root and they just didn't label it? What are their marketing people thinking? Prices were high, too. 16.98 for the smallish box. I'm hoping they get in newer varieties in pots later, because I'm not buying from this shipment....See MoreWhere can I purchase Taboo?
Comments (16)I have been looking for this rose forever.I was unlucky to loose one ownroot to winter and two grafted roses I bought from hortico failed to break dormancy. So I still am looking for this rose, preferably ownroot. Roseland nursery used to be mail order source for this rose.I talked to the owner of the nursery last year and the year before that. They have stopped shipping roses.Try and see if you could get them to ship.See if there is someone living in the vicinity of the nursery willing to help you .I believe their roses are sold at the local farmers market. I happend to stumble upon a members page on HMF (Athenea's secret Garden and read that the owner of the garden has started propagating roses for bussiness purposes. I have mailed the person(The e-mail is listed on the HMF)last summer and this spring.I haven't gotten a response yet.I have thought of starting a thread here requesting for the identtity of Ahenea a.k.a Purpleroses and if she responds we can plead our case. We could also start a thread requesting the proud owners of Taboo with skills to root cuttings to help. We can always hope that Karl has it available at some point in the future. For now Iam happy to have Firefighter and Deep secret. Dana...See MoreJ&P's new catalog
Comments (7)Or, even your older brother's or sister's. The only "penalty" for selling them as an "incorrect" class is your not buying them. But then, the class which has traditionally out sold all others in these catalogs is the "High bred Tea", so they probably figure they stand a better chance of dumping the plants they picked up for the catalog by calling these geese, chicken. I'm sure there will be plenty of people who will pony up their money, then flood the forums asking "what's wrong with my rose? They aren't HTs!" Get ready..Kim...See MoreAlana8aSC
