Amaryllis/Hippeastrum

Looking for: hippeastrum mandonii pollen.

My h.mandonii is about to flower for the 3rd time since July 2015. Is this typical for this species? I didn’t get a very good seed set from self-pollination, and would like h.mandonii pollen from another of the same species for another try.

If anyone has h.mandonii pollen available, please write to me privately, as this latest flower will be open very shortly. I can provide pollen, seeds, or postage in return.

I've actually just purchased some pollen from you on eBay.

My most advanced mandonii I bought as a 12-18 month seedling, its been growing very vigorously and I have had it around a year so it would be at least 2-2 1/2 years old

Would you know how old mandonii has to be to flower? I'm going to freeze the pollen I get from you and use that

Once I eventually get flowers I'm happy to swap pollen/seeds if you still require it.

I bought some seeds from a US seller and they are growing very strongly also

Hi Wiljonn,

Mine came from Telos, and has grown faster than any hippeastrum I've ever seen. It was ~8-9cm wide when it started it's first flower spike, so it sounds like yours should start sometime soon. All else equal, the width of the bulb probably determines whether it can bloom or not. I have h.evansiae, which sends up a nice didplay from a fairly small 4-5cm bulb. It appears that mandonii needs to be larger.

Self-pollination of the first set of flowers produced fewer seeds than expected. The second set received pollen from cybister 'Chico'. One pod failed early on, but the second pod is much larger and 'lush' looking, pictured. This one is starting to ripen, which is very exciting, and has taken twice as long as the earlier pod, probably because it's much cooler now.

The latest flowers, spike #3, received mandonii pollen from a different genetic line, so the waiting game starts again!

Hi I have the plant you are looking for. Hillii is not yellow or gold. It is nearly white with a slight yellow, the flowers are small and pinched but there are very many of them making a lush foxtail. The plant I have is a young one, 4 years old with 7 to 8 growths, probably 3 to 4 years from blooming. Don Brown is not an exceptionally good speciosum. The flower size and shape is not note worthy. It got so much attention because the awarded plant was so big. 2,000 lbs, needed a fork lift to put it in place and it got a very high Culture award for the outstanding growth that was on display not because of the quality of the plant. A smaller plant of similar nature would have been ignored by the judges. If you want rich deep gold or yellow on a large, open flower these things are around but expensive and hard to find. At our own orchid show a vendor had 2 plants like that, in bloom, one spike each but great quality. He wanted $300 for each of them and I was dicking with him hoping to get a better price near the end of the show. Suddenly both the plants were gone. He claims he got $500 for each of them. In my experience bulbs are heavy feeders. Whether you try to grow using organisms and a rich mix or whether you try to grow with a rich mix and plant food, organic or not, soil can be about the same. It should feature lots of digestible organic matter and lots of air, also a gentle texture. Amaryllis roots like the best of everything. My mix starts with a light potting mix, which should be fragrant of compost, not just peat. I add washed fine gravel or sand, some perlite, and a bit of charcoal. When wet it stays where a root pushes it, holds the root system in place but is easily removable in transplanting, and because I keep bulbs in clay remains highly oxygen-rich and sweet. Sun issues here are easy. All the plants want as much as they can get behind a big window in NYC. The question is more who will tolerate the subordinate position by being higher than the more one next to the window and more efficient in photosynthesizing. Cold tolerance by roots takes precedence over sun needs here. I'll know more about species preference by this summer's results. My hybrids, though, seem noticeably variable is growing efficiency. Will the species vary as well? I wonder.

All this reminds me of Marek's disease in poultry. Some of the ornamental breeders on finding Marek's in one bird cull their whole flocks over and over. On discussing this with my avian veterinarian he says that all birds carry Marek's but, some show symptoms and some do not via stress or poor genetics. One of my friends that had a large collection of Hippeastrum collection gave me his entire collection because of perceived TMV several years ago (large). He was going to burn them. I adjusted the PH of the soil, sprayed for bugs, and all turned back a dark green. Go figure. Are they infected? I don't really care. They bloom and grow fine for a long time. A few look mosaic when I first drag them out of the basement and put in the full sun when their leaves are burned. Maybe that is what he saw. Who knows.

Here is the excerpt from the article I was talking about. Vigor is an attribute of H. papilio and bulbs are comparatively large. This vigor is passed on to progeny with several parent combinations. Flower characteristics is another issue. Most H. papilio crossed with another species usually will result in F1 seedlings which show flowers influenced by the other parent. Flower form and size may be affected, but color predictably will be dominated by the other parent. Without parent knowledge, one would be hard pressed to visually identify H. papilio traits in many of its F1 hybrids. The same may hold true with the F2 generation unless back crossed with H. papilio (and this could be a longer shot than expected). Third generation F3 crosses with both parents having H. papilio in the parent trail have produced seedlings that reveal some H. papilio traits. (And a limited few are somewhat close.)
