Plumeria cutting - wrinkling

My parents live in Florida and have two healthy pulmerias. While there for Christmas, I took a cutting from one about a foot long (it had lost its leaves for winter). I am back in Nevada and already my cutting is starting to wrinkle around the center. It is very minor at this point but I am afraid it will get worse. The stick is still pretty hard, but I wouldn't say ROCK hard, it has maybe a very slight give from my finger. When do I pot it? I have the supplies but was letting it dry a bit, is it drying too fast? Should I pot it and let it do its thing or is it rotting? Obviously I have no idea what I am doing...help!

I would go ahead and start rooting it.

I am rooting one right now using the bag method. I just take a quart ziplock bag and fill 3/4 with lightly moist potting soil. I then lightly tie the top of the bag with a rubber coated wire. Place that in a warm room, and don't touch it for about 4-6 weeks. You should eventually see roots, and can pot it, and lightly water.

Well, hope for the best, but the wrinkling is a bad sign. Many methods but I just keep cuttings in a dry dark place all winter and then stick it in potting soil about March or April.

Hey everyone I live in Ontario Canada and I fall in hardiness zone 5. What I'm wondering is how do I get my plumeria cutting to grow ? I have it in a cactus mix in an 6-8 inch pot. What I'm finding is I have small leaves starting approx 1 inch long but fiND the plant sort of stalled there. What is the hottest it should be before moving to shade ? I have been told too use high phosphorus fertilizer and water once every 2 weeks. I've dipped several wrinkled cuttings in root tone and potted them. They all rooted. (The red one slower to root)The bottoms do tend to receed and sometimes turn off white. They should be ok. Maybe you could give it a little poke with a sewing pin. If it oozes white it is most likely fine. If it oozes brown, it is not good. Brighty

Hi bean-sprout. I had that problem with the wrinkled stem quite a few months ago and posted a note here. The popular vote was basically it was thirsty. I had one recently that I noticed was getting a wrinkled stem too, so I watered it, and it's starting to look better. I think the once a month thing during dormancy sounds like a good plan. I've also read that in the spring it's good to give them a good healthy watering with superthrive. Good luck on that and keep us posted. I'm sure you'll get a few more suggestions. Lauri

I've heard a few different methods about working with dehydrated plumerias. One is to stick the cutting into a pitcher of water for about 48 hours and it should rehydrate. I have not tried this method personally.

I instead wrap moist paper towels around the stems and the cutting will draw moisture that way. Just keep the paper towels moist with a spray bottle and change the paper towels once a week. This has worked for me in the past.

I also suggest bag rooting, even though its a method I just started using. I like to be able to see the roots developing. As jedoba stated, only lightly moisten the soil as the moisture will stay in the bag. Too wet and you will get stem rot, too dry and it may not do anything. I tape my bags up with electrical tape
